I tried to sit in the high-backed chair as though I sat in it every day. As
though studio lights were set up around me all the time. As though having
at least two cameras zoomed in on my face from different angles was a
normal occurrence. As though sleeping and existing in the royal suite of the
Seelie castle was a run-of-the-mill thing.

--- --- --- --- ---
The human interviewer, a brisk and oddly confrontational woman, looked
me square in the eyes. “The human population is understandably concerned
and anxious about recent happenings, Queen Kallik. What assurances are you
able to give us about our ongoing safety?”
Here’s the recap I couldn’t tell the humans. Two weeks ago, the fae giant
Rubezahl was catapulted into Underhill by Queen Elisavanna of the Unseelie,
who sacrificed her life to send him away, but before he left this realm, he
unleashed his outcast army on Unimak, destroying everything in his path,
human and otherwise, on his way to the fae courts. That collateral damage
was very much an issue given humans outnumber us fifty to one and possess
a range of mass murder weapons.
“The fae in question was dealt with,” I answered, the creeping feeling of
deja-vu coming over me. “We are working to contain the aftermath, and thus
far our efforts have been successful.”
This was my first human interview since I was sorted and took up rule of
the Seelie court, but the CTN or CMM or whichever agency this journalist
was from weren’t the first humans or fae to come hounding me for answers.
My father’s old advisors had coached me on the best response, and suggested
this woman the best one to interview with. By now, I could say the words in
my sleep. The human leaned forward, pinning me with a cool look over her thick
spectacles. “So, there’s no way this fae being, this . . . giant, could return to
wreak havoc and harm our children?”
I lifted a shoulder. “Not that I know of. Shouldn’t rule it out, I suppose.
He’s old and powerful.” And far more resourceful than anyone had given him
credit for over his centuries’ long life. He’d steadily brainwashed hundreds of
outcast fae using his special tea in a bid to conquer the courts.
There was an audible intake of air from my Seelie advisors, standing in a
row to my left. What? Right, wrong words.
“There is a known fae population in the Alaskan Triangle,” she said next.
“In recent years, the human death and disappearance toll in the area has
catapulted to horrifying levels. Are your kind behind that too?”
I tilted my head, holding her gaze. “What are you implying?”
