RHIANNON
Rhiannon ran barefoot through the lush forest floor, covered with moss
and leaves. Spring had settled over the land, and she could hear
laughter from a nearby celebration echoing on the wind. The breeze
swept over her, the setting sun’s rays warming her skin. Her people would
be celebrating Beltane, the midway mark between the spring equinox and
the summer solstice. The ceremonial fires would be lit, and the children of
Danu would dance until the sunrise of the following day.
Peculiar, Rhiannon thought to herself. I do not recall Beatha mentioning
that any of our people would be joining us to celebrate this year . . . I
wonder, has Elder Ecna brought company?

Her thoughts were interrupted by a flutter of dark wings that flew before
her eyes as a striking raven perched on a branch of a nearby yew tree. She
paused to admire the regal beauty of the creature for a moment.
Rhia’s heart began to race as she smelled a slight tinge of smoke
wafting in the air. The scent of burning trees and something else that she
could not quite place.
All at once, a deafening scream pierced the silence of the forest as a
dagger seemed to come out of nowhere, impaling through the center of the
raven’s chest. The bird fell from the branch into a lifeless mass of blood and
feathers on the ground.
Rhiannon immediately leapt forward as she cried out, scooping up the
bird into her arms and attempting to remove the dagger. She pressed the
hem of her tunic into the bird’s chest in an effort to stop the bleeding. She
felt an icy cold chill climb her spine as the raven opened its eyes, meeting
her gaze. The creature’s eyes were the most piercing gold color she had
ever seen. She broke into a cold sweat as panic began to set in, she could
now hear screams and cries all around her as the forest became engulfed in
flames.
Rhiannon opened her eyes with a jolt, her breathing was labored, her
linen bedclothes soaked in cold sweat. She focused on the warm sunlight
pouring into the house as she turned away from the window by her bed,
flinging an arm over her eyes to delay the start of the day.
As if she could prevent the sun’s imminent rise, and with it, today’s
task. She huffed a breath as she slowly sat up and felt the coolness of the
wooden floor against her bare feet.
This was reality.
Here and now. Each breath settled her as she attempted to quiet her
mind and reorient herself to her surroundings.
It was only a dream.
Each creak of the wood was familiar as she collected her linen robe and
followed the smell of brewing tea into the kitchen. “I thought you’d sleep
all day, child—you’d best prepare for Elder Ecna.” Beatha greeted her with
a half-smile and a gleam in her eye.
“Oh Beatha, I’ve done nothing but prepare . . . for weeks. Do I not have
the marks to prove it?” Rhiannon replied in an exasperated tone as she held
up the pale skin
