VEXXION
The weathered gray stone of the border fortress loomed ahead,
perched on the mountain peak like an enormous bird of prey. Below
it and stretching across the top of the cliff, I could just make out the
dark openings of the aerie where the fortress’s dragons roosted when they
weren’t training or flying riders on patrols across the valley below. The
empty stables on the right were for me and the two men I traveled with.
Some might say I was the true predator here, and they wouldn’t be
wrong. When I was sent on a mission, there was nothing–and no one–who
could stop me from completing it.

Today’s mission would change the course of someone’s life, deviating
them onto a path many others had been placed on already. Did I like that I
played a part in such a horrifying plan? No, but I was granted few choices
myself. Like the game of Wraithweave, each game piece had one role. In
today’s game, I was the master.
“How long will you need with the fortress commander?” Zayde asked
from where he flew to my left on his own dragon.
“Not long,” I said.
I still wasn’t quite sure why I, in particular, had been sent, but I hadn’t
asked questions. I never did.
A gust of wind swept up the tall cliff, bursting across us, and I changed
my dragon’s flight with a subtle touch of my heel on Glim’s side. He
responded by angling his body, accommodating the air currents with a
sweep of his massive wings and the twisting of his scaled spine. For a
dragon as large as mine, a few spurts of air like this were nothing. Like all
those bred in the fae realm, our dragons were huge, much larger than those
I’d find at the fortress.
Zayde had come on this mission by choice, and I trusted him as much as
I could anyone.
Farnoll, flying to my right, grunted. He’d said almost nothing while we
traveled, but my cousin had never been one for conversation, especially
with me. He rode with us as assigned, and he needed watching.
With a light touch of my heel, I flew Glim lower. We’d leave our
mounts in the fortress’s stable while I met with the commander. It had been
a long journey, and they were eager to return home.
As Glim slowed the pace of his blue scaled wings and extended his
forearm-length claws to land on the edge of an open stable, I felt her.
She was an eerie scrape across my skin. A shifting of the world beneath
me.
A sudden stilling.
I froze, suddenly, inexplicably shattered. Before now, I’d barely existed.
On this journey, I’d played the role of the Wraithweave master, the one
controlling every other piece on the board.
But now that I’d found her . . .
I was the one being lifted and placed on a new path.
I became the shield.
