It was finally dark outside, and Quinn was ready. She had a flashlight,
a bottle of mace spray, and a shotgun.
Tonight was the night she caught these creeps in the act.
Somebody had been skulking around the property for a couple of weeks
now. She’d found footprints near the barn, and she’d seen the same little
white sedan speeding away several times after she’d sworn she heard
somebody talking outside the house.
Quinn lived alone in the big farmhouse she’d inherited from her
grandfather last year. She’d tried calling the cops about this, but nobody
really wanted her here, and the Sheriff was no different. He’d told her to
call when she had an actual crime to report.
Why did people have to judge others on sight so much? It wasn’t
Quinn’s fault that her hair had all turned white by the time she was 18.
People always assumed she bleached it, though, and that was enough for
them to make all sorts of assumptions about her and her lifestyle.
This tiny town she’d moved to was no different. Rumors had quickly
circulated that she had some dark gang-related past, and just about everyone
was wary of her before they even spoke to her. Quinn had hoped that would
change after she settled into her new home, but it had been six months since
she’d arrived, and so far people were as judgmental as ever. In turn, she
wasn’t terribly motivated to befriend people who were rude to her, and so
life was kind of lonely out here.
A loud pop sounded outside, and her hand snapped to the shotgun. A
crackle and flickering colorful light told her that it wasn’t any person out
there, though.
I almost forgot it’s the 4th of July, Quinn thought, leaning against the
wall of the barn. She figured the creeps would see her if she was inside the
house, so she’d situated herself in a shadowy corner against the big red
building instead. They were only about a hundred feet apart, and she could
see the farmhouse’s blue siding clearly in the moonlight.
The fireworks whistled and crackled above, more and more starting up.
It was pretty, she had to admit. Someday it would be nice to be able to relax
and watch the show without having to worry about weirdos sneaking
around at night. Maybe next year.
She hadn’t seen the little white car in days. That didn’t mean they’d
given up, of course. Maybe aiming a shotgun at them would get that
accomplished. It wasn’t even loaded; Quinn didn’t actually want to shoot
anyone. The creeps wouldn’t know that, though.
Whoever was creeping around seemed kind of cowardly so far. They
didn’t want her to see them, and always took off the moment they realized
she was home. If they kept getting spooked, no crime would ever be
committed, so she’d have no ground to stand on with the police. That was
why Quinn had decided to hide and see what they tried to do when they
thought she wasn’t home.
