I blew a raspberry with my lips as I threw my bag in the car after a
loonnnggg week of work. My first draft submissions had been rejected, all
of them, wholly and completely, by my manager. Oh, and she’d ripped me a
new one right in front of my team. That was nice.
The thing is, I knew they were good. Really good. And I knew she was
just getting back at me for accidentally making her look bad in front of her
boss. She’d been stealing my work for months. Taking what I submitted and
putting her name on it before sending it up the chain of command, so when
I’d kinda sorta slipped in my signature on the back of one of the originals
that went straight to the marketing director, her schemes fell apart. It was
awesome. And yeah, it also wasn’t an accident.
I drove home during rush hour, same as always, and jammed out to some
screamo music while my ten-mile drive took half an hour. I didn’t always
listen to screamo, but after the week I just survived, it was my way of
unwinding.

“Anyone home?” I called when I walked through the door.
“We’re in here,” Hannah called from the kitchen. She’s my super social,
extroverted roommate who loves people and parties and anything she can
host.
I walked into the kitchen to see Hannah leaning against the counter
talking with Beth, my other roommate, who was already several scoops into
a new pint of ice cream.
“What happened?” I asked, grabbing a soda from the fridge before
joining Beth at the bar stools.
“You know that after-school program I run at Hannah’s elementary
school?” Beth asked.
“Yeah.”
“Well, this cute guy came by to pick up his little brother. He looked like
he was my age, a total hipster, and he was flirting hard core with me, so I
figured I might as well flirt back.”
I laughed. Beth had a thing for hipsters. I didn’t get it, but she certainly
saw something in that style. “That doesn’t seem ice cream appropriate.”
“It does when that guy is actually seventeen,” Hannah finished for Beth
and I couldn’t help the chuckle that fell out of my lips.
“Yeah, gross,” Beth said with her mouth half full of ice cream. “Last
time I flirt with anyone at a school.”
“That’s probably a wise choice,” Hannah said with a little smile. “But at
least Principal Newman wasn’t around to see it.”
“You could join me and just swear off men altogether,” I said. Guys
were annoying and dating was a burden that just caused unnecessary drama
in life. I’d get over that viewpoint eventually, once memories of CJ were
further back in my mind. We’d been broken up for four months already, but
the hurt was deep. We’d been engaged and that kind of breakup doesn’t
leave you ready to jump back into dating.
“Well,” I said, putting a consoling hand on her back, “it’s not the first
