My gaze swept across the busy bar, glancing at the Friday night crowd
dressed up for a few warm-up drinks before their night out truly began. The
Lucky Jester was a ‘starter’ pub, a small community establishment where
people gathered before heading into the city to livelier, louder places.
I, however, was happy where I was. I would enjoy a few glasses of wine
and some conversation with my colleague before wandering home with a
clear head, and then spend the weekend ensuring I stayed ahead of lesson
planning for the coming weeks.
And you wonder why people call you a workaholic…
After a long week at Brookdale Primary School, Gaby had told me in no
uncertain terms that my unsociable arse needed an evening out. Not that I
was unsociable, just getting used to life in a new job, and a small part of me
worried that if I was seen out on the town, it might somehow reflect badly
on me.
Relax. You’re having a quiet drink with a colleague, not performing a lap
dance in a nightclub.
Shaking my head, I waited for Gaby to get back from the ladies’ room, my
eyes drifting around again. A group of young girls in short dresses and no
coats—clearly unable to feel the January cold—stood by the doors, giggling
at something on one of their phones. I wasn’t sure if they were aware of the
two young lads sitting across the room checking them out with lust-filled
eyes. As I shifted my focus, my eyes landed on a man ordering drinks at the
bar. Tall and well-built with short honey-blonde hair, probably mid-thirties
at most. He wore black jeans with a belt and a crisp, tucked-in white shirt.
Something about his profile as he turned his head seemed familiar, but I
couldn’t quite place him.
My phone buzzed on the table in front of me, and I looked down at it,
rolling my eyes as I saw the message preview.
Jade: You won’t find Mr Right in that dive. Why don’t
you…
I didn’t bother opening it to read the rest as it would be the same selfrighteous diatribe about how I needed to hurry up and find myself a ‘good
man’. Jade may have been my best friend, but her opinions on what I
needed to do, especially when it came to relationships, were getting old fast.
Instead of answering her, I went back to staring at the man by the bar, trying
to work out where I knew him from.
“What are you looking at?” Gaby asked, catching my attention as she sat
down beside me again. She offered a cheeky grin; a trademark of hers.
Gaby was mischief personified.
I nodded towards the guy in the white shirt. My eyes remained on him as I
tried to remember where I’d seen him before. I picked up my wine glass to
take a sip as I mulled it over.
