13 Months Later
There are moments in life when you can either do the right thing and feel
miserable now, or you could do the wrong thing and possibly feel miserable
later. Especially if karma had anything to do with it. I believe it’s the damned
if you do and damned if you don’t syndrome. Taking my birth control pills
fell into this category. I looked at the pill and then in the mirror at my bare
stomach. Somehow, I could imagine this little white tablet turning into a
dagger and stabbing tiny, defenseless eggs floating around inside me—
hearing them pop like an overblown balloon. My jaw twisted as I threw the
little killers of dreams back in the drawer.

What was I doing? This was against my master plan…to have fun with
Tyler and work my butt off to one day direct on Broadway. Not that I carried
master plans in my pocket any longer. Not since my fiancé left me the same
year my dad died. For my whole life, Dad had been on every blueprint,
especially because he raised me by himself. Of course I’d get married. He
was going to walk me down the aisle and learn to rap a toast as a joke. It was
important to him that I got married. And I did. Tyler was great fun. I had
worn bunions to attest to that fact. Although it had been months since we’d
gone dancing. Or eaten a meal on the same sofa. Or even meandered for
pastries on Sunday mornings. I was wrapped up in my work, and he was
building a name for himself acting on small productions that drew crowds of
a hundred people or less.
I guess the notion of missing a pill or five came from my loneliness. I
didn’t exactly feel lonely until our schedules met up and we were home at the
same time. And Dad did always say if I had a baby, to name it after his
mother, the greatest woman there was. I just didn’t know what nickname
could come of Mabel. Maybe Bella? Who knows, by the time she was in
school, Mabel might have made a comeback. Then again, Mae was simple
enough to spell for a small child. I couldn’t take the chance she would hold
the name Mabel against me in her teenage years.
