Tonight, We Shine
“Mom, can I borrow your earrings?
e diamonds? I think they’d match,”
I say, twirling, my new dress
swinging just above my knees.
And throwing myself back onto her chaise.
“Of course. Just check in my closet.
But you’re almost ready, right?
Because this night is official
and important to me, to your dad.
e biggest evening of our lives.
And your father has been under
such pressure. is is his business,
his everything. Just . . . we need
you to be there and to be your
energetic and true, beautiful self.
Can you do that for us?”
I nod as I take in their dressing room,
the gowns stretched out on chairs
and over couches. Both of us
trying to gure out the exact
combination of perfection.

A Night to Celebrate
Clark Brooks. Dad.
His company. His people.
His community.
All with the family that loves him,
adores him, would do anything
for him. My mom pulls me up,
up and into a hug.
e full-length mirror holds us,
our reection pointed back.
“Chloe, this is our night,” she says.
“A night to celebrate your father
and all of his incredible success.
Everything he has built up
around us. For us.”
And I believe every word.
Luxury Over Everything
Our life is big here.
Maxed out. Everything massive
and breaking out at the seams.
And Dad is the biggest of all.
Big personality, big energy,
big life, big performer,
big spirit, big, broad shoulders,
big mood swings, big heart,
big anger, big boisterous joy,
big vacations, big gifts,
big surprises, big gestures,
big meals, big appetite for life,
big smile, but most of all,
big spender
Showcase
“Hello out there!” Dad yells toward their room.
“e car is here. Let’s go! We can’t be late.
Come on,” he calls up again,
his voice booming.
I look at him across the room.
Dad is our everything.
He looks like a star too.
Tuxedo, black hair perfect.
He is checking his watch
and catches me staring.
“Chloe, you look stunning,” he says.
I trust him.
Hold close to every single word.
Mom walks out into the hallway.
She is shimmering too. Long gown.
Diamonds. Everything feels sparkling.
Like gold. Tonight, we glow.
Shine
“Lana, I have something for you.”
“ere is nothing I want,” Mom says,
her smile reaching across the foyer.
e lights twirling outside,
the almost-summer evening sky.
“Just you. Just this family. Just tonight.”
“In case you change your mind . . . this is for you,”
he says, handing over a narrow box.
Her smile gleams, stretches even farther
across the room. I know that look.
e one that loves how big he is.
e one that adores his over the top,
his extra, his extravagance. His glitter
and shine. He pulls another identical box
from the bag he is carrying. Inside them
are matching diamond necklaces.
One for Mom
and one for me.
Everything is a production.
