JESSE
Napkins? Check.
Plates? Check. Disposable but not flimsy paper. They’re nicer.
Laminated menus? Check.
I’d run through the checklist so many times that I knew it by heart. I
also knew I had everything I needed for my first day of being an
entrepreneur with my own food truck. I, Jesse Crane, was about to start the
first day of the rest of my life. I couldn’t wait.
“Seriously?” My brother Errol wrinkled his nose and glanced around
the truck. He would not be a regular presence there on the banks of the
Salem Harbor—Are they banks? Perhaps that’s not the right word—but had
agreed to hang out on my first day so that my nerves wouldn’t get the better
of me, and I wouldn’t lose my sanity. Even though I found Errol
ridiculously annoying—as the firstborn boy in my family, he said he had no
choice but to make my life hell—he was a calming presence. Well, at least
sometimes. He did own his own business. He was the proud proprietor of
the Rogue Bear Taproom in Boston, a good thirty minutes away, without
traffic. It was a different sort of business, but he still understood my anxiety.
He also liked irritating me to the nth degree. He could’ve lettered in that
when we were teenagers.
“What?” I demanded, my hands landing on my hips as I turned to meet
his steady gaze. “What are you about to say to rain on my parade?”
Errol and I shared the same dark looks, so when he arched an eyebrow, I
recognized the facial expression from my own mirror.
“Calm down, whiner,” he chided. “I was just thinking.”
He angled himself to look out at Derby Street. Not a lot of people were
walking the sidewalks as yet, but that wasn’t surprising. The day was still
early. I’d purposely set up my truck early because I wanted to be ready
when the lunch hour rolled around. We still had time.
“What’s the deal with this stretch again?” he asked. “I know you told
me, but I can’t quite remember.”
I narrowed my eyes. The question felt like a trick. Errol was good at
catching me in tricky conversations. Though I considered this one, I
couldn’t identify his angle.
“The Downtown Development Authority wants to move food trucks
into the mix,” I replied, choosing my words carefully. “They’re trying to
streamline the tourist business in Salem, and this is part of it.”
“Yeah, but why are you here instead of over in Salem Common? That
seems like it would be the better location.”
I didn’t disagree with him. That would be a better location. However, it
was summer, and the DDA had been adamant. They wanted to test the
trucks in various locations. When issuing permits, they’d been honest and
forthright. They didn’t know if their plan was going to work. Salem
Common was always busy when Halloween rolled around. In fact, it was
overloaded. That’s why they wanted to test food trucks in different
locations. So, while Salem Common had been my first choice, I wasn’t
completely upset with where I’d ended up.
