If you don’t know where you’re going,
You might wind up someplace else.
~ Yogi Berra
The world is full of people who know what they want to be when they
grow up. I am not one of those people. The closest I’ve come to feeling
like I found my life’s purpose has been my summer job at the local
coffee shop in my hometown of Bordeaux, Ohio.

--- --- --- --- ---
I swipe at a splash on the counter and tuck my rag into my half-apron.
Two more weeks of working as a barista at Bean There Done That. In
fourteen days, my best friend, Madeline, and I will pack up to head back for
our senior year at UCLA.
The shop door swings open. Madeline’s brother, Cameron, and his best
friend, Ben, walk in. I smooth my apron. Why? It’s not like the apron police
are coming through town. I just need something to do with my hands. And
my mouth. I know that sounds beyond weird, but I’m a blurter when I get
nervous, it’s like someone shoots me with a double shot of truth serum and I
just start blabbing the first crazy thing that comes to mind. And then I keep
going like a runaway car in need of a brake pedal, spilling all my inner
thoughts without a filter.
And, believe me, when it comes to being around Cameron, I need a filter
and a brake pedal, among other things. Cameron Reeves is as gorgeous as his
name makes him sound. He’s about six feet tall, which is the height I always
wrote in my ideal man list in my journal. Yes. I have a list of qualities I want
in a man. And the one approaching the counter ticks all those boxes—except
two.
He’s my best friend’s older brother.
He barely knows I exist.
That is, unless you count the fact that I’m a fixture in his life. Cameron
probably gives me as much thought as he gives his sofa. It’s there. It’s always
been there. Comfortable, reliable, old sofa.
“Hey, Riley Bo Biley, Fee Fie Fo Filey!” That was not Cameron.
You know how every hot movie star has their supporting man? The dorky
sidekick, or the life-of-the-party guy who provides a contrast to the hot,
overwhelmingly perfect, leading man. Well, Cameron’s wingman is the
charming, goofy, effervescent, Ben.
“Hey, Ben. What can I get you today?”
So far so good. Not a blurt or babble. Maybe if I just focus on Ben, I’ll
avoid humiliating myself in front of Cameron.
“I’m feeling the need for one of your iced mochas, Rye.” Ben lowers his
voice to a conspiratorial whisper even though he and Cameron are the only
customers in the shop right now. “But make sure you make it. You’re the best
barista here. Don’t tell the others I said that.”
Ben winks. It’s not a flirty wink. Well, it is, but you have to know Ben.
He flirts with life. Winking is part of his regular arsenal of interactions. Hugs,
smiles, compliments, all just flow from Ben. He scatters kindness like a
confetti cannon.
I take Ben’s payment. Cameron steps up to the counter, completely
oblivious to the fact that my pulse just kicked up about ten notches. It’s like a
stampede of happy little horses start galloping through my veins. Giddy-up!
There’s Cameron!
