Six months later
Maggie grabbed the motor keys for the skiff and took off down the dock.
Climbing into her little boat always had the same effect—a sense of history,
because her grandfather had held the same tiller handle she now held, and she
imagined particles of his DNA embedded in the same ropes he had tied. Only
this boat was different because she’d been in an accident with the old one, but
this boat was nicer, with a bimini top protecting her from the sun and
comfortable seats instead of the aluminum bench.

The sun was low in the western sky as she turned the boat around at the
dock, heading into open water. As she steered out into the bay, its briny smell
and the gasoline exhaust from the outboard motor brought memories rushing
up of her childhood
Trying for gratitude when her thoughts drifted into forbidden territory, she
knew how lucky she was to be married to Justin, who worshiped her, mother
to adorable and smart Tina, and independently wealthy, thanks to her exhusband and a thriving graphic design business.
And she had those two girlfriends who were closer than sisters, both
married to Justin’s brothers.
With wise investment of her divorce settlement, Justin’s income from the
veterinary clinic, income from her business, and living a frugal lifestyle for
people of their means, Justin and Maggie’s portfolio made them among the
wealthiest residents of Cypress Cove. In return, she did things for her friends
that she’d never dreamed of having the finances for—paying for Annie’s
master’s program, giving Katrina money to expand her marketing business,
and building the satellite clinic for Justin there on Bayou Cottage land.
But most of all, she was grateful for what she could do for the animal
rescue on her property, and for the wild horses.
The evening boating excursion was only possible because Justin had
called to say a maternity emergency at the pig farm in Saint John’s Parish
meant he’d be out until late.
“Can you stay for a little longer?” Maggie had asked Rhonda, the nanny.
