I swear to god, I’m gonna…
I growl at the parking space before me. The one currently occupied by
a car that’s decidedly not mine. I know that because a. I am presently sitting
at the wheel of my un-chic but reliable Toyota Corolla, hands tightening on
the cracking leather as I seethe at my windshield and b. not in a million
years of fever dreams could I ever afford the shiny army green Jeep
Wrangler so casually occupying the slot that had been designated as mine at
the start of the semester three weeks ago.
Sleek, gleaming, and with the top removed, it speaks of carefree
southern California afternoons, of drives filled with salty breezes to riffle
one’s hair. Of a driver who actually has the time and luxury to do those
things rather than cramming in as many shifts at Franklin U’s favorite
student haunt, Shenanigans, as humanly possible and studying until Godsave-us-all o’clock in the morning. The faded COEXIST sticker on the back
bumper strikes me as particularly ironic because right now, I want nothing
more than to gun my little car forward and dent the bumper in.
Coexist like that, stupid Jeep.
I know better, though. Criminal charges aside, my Corolla will
inevitably suffer more than the rugged Jeep.
I still harbor an instantaneous and fierce dislike for the owner of the
Jeep, though, whoever he might be.
This is the fourth time someone has taken my spot, and though it’s
always a different car, I know the collective culprits.
My gaze swings to the Delta Iota Kappa frat house to the left, the
parking lot jam-packed with similar examples of affluence in a variety of
appealing colors. Last week, it had been a Porsche the same color of the
nearby ocean I rarely get to enjoy that had taken my spot. Before that, an
Audi with a custom job the color of a sunset—something I also haven’t
gotten to enjoy in forever. And yeah, my assigned spot is literally right next
to the edge of their lot, but no way they didn’t know. They just don’t care.
Because they’re frat dudes, and as long as they have their brotherhood,
booze, and an occasional fundraiser to reassure themselves that they’re
giving back to the community, they never do.
A couple of Solo cups shift in the breeze and roll onto the nearby lawn
of the Life Sciences Living and Learning (LaL house for short, though it’s
been further nicknamed the LoL house by the DIKs next door, who
apparently find a whole house of people devoted to sciences that might save
the earth and their garish automobiles somehow hilarious).
I’d been dying to get into the house since I’d learned about it freshman
year. Eleven fellow ecology, biology, and zoology geeks living together and
sharing knowledge? Sign me up. That’s my kind of fraternity and the
quintessence of the word, not some dumb social custom for the rich or a
perpetual excuse to party and be a tool.
