--- --- --- --- ---
Beyond the cicadas, Azrael Hikaim thought he could hear screaming.
His name called out—breaking through the trees like the early
morning sunshine currently blinding him—rang in his ears and, deep within
his soul, he knew something had happened. He laced the front of his pants,
picked his sword up from the rock he had it resting on, and ran back
towards the makeshift camp his unit had settled in before they continued to
track the rebellion further into the mountains. A crack resounded through
the trees, rattling Azrael’s bones, and the sickening crunch that followed
increased his speed. His head began to swim as his body went on high alert.
Something was very, very wrong.
Azrael broke through the tree line into the small clearing they had claimed
in time to see a mallet of stone, seeped in blood, come down on Rayna’s
hands, her wrists bound tightly while her body was crushed beneath a
second, larger man. Her scream snapped the tether on Azrael’s fury, his
sight reduced to the vulnerable opening in the armor of the man holding the
mallet, between his chest and helmet. Without thinking, Azrael slipped the
dagger he kept strapped on his thigh and hurled it through the air, sliding
with ease in that small opening. The man’s body dropped to his knees,
mallet falling uselessly in the grass.
The man holding Rayna down shot to
his feet, black eyes promising a fight. Azrael didn’t waste the momentum he
had built. Angling his sword just so, he launched himself off the dead man’s
back and onto the one over Rayna. His sword sunk without struggle beneath
the man’s chin. The force of his jump sent him and the now dying man into
the dirt behind Rayna. Azrael braced himself, rolling off the body, and leapt
back to his feet. He took a breath, surveying the wreck of the camp.
His fellow soldiers were tied up at the feet of rebels, their misshapen and
worn armor glinting in the sunrise, with all eyes on him. Twelve men stood
behind his eight. He could do this. He would have to do this, to save them
from what Rayna was still screaming from, and worse. He didn’t know how
his camp had been taken so easily, nor how twelve men had snuck up on
them, past those on watch, but it didn’t matter now. Azrael flexed his hand
around the hilt before running at the closest rebel, but he didn’t make two
steps before the crack of a skull shattered his focus. No. Red hair and blood
mixed together, pooling in the dirt.
His heart hardened with wrath as he kept moving, sword slicing through
the first rebel, but met the second’s with steel. The rebels, in Azrael’s
interactions, hadn’t been trained as thoroughly as he was, and only a
fraction as long, but their determination always surprised him.
Determination to survive only took one so far. With a duck, a spin on his
heels, and another scream striking the air, Azrael gutted the man before
him.
It became a pattern before the others abandoned their screaming,
pleading, victims and advanced on him. Step, duck, step, parry, lunge
