Clover
In the dimly lit anatomical theater of Titan Falls’s gothic university, I’m
in the midst of a clandestine operation. My best friend, Ardyn, helps me,
though her movements betray a struggle to keep herself composed.
As she carefully arranges the crystals within the protective salt circle, I watch
her from the center, my gaze filled with a mix of curiosity and frustration.
The atmosphere is charged, the weight of our unspoken secrets hanging
heavy between us.

--- --- --- --- ---
The theater is used by Titan Falls medical students to dissect donated corpses
during the day, creepy and unnerving by itself. But at night, the renovated
17th century theater is haunting, terrifying, and full of the terrible acts
committed centuries ago.
In other words, perfect.
A loud clatter sounds out. Ardyn loses her balance, and one of the larger
crystals falls to the floor.
“Shit,” she mutters.
I can’t help but feel a rush of impatience. “Careful. Don’t disrupt the delicate
balance of energies we’re trying to create.”
Ardyn’s eyes meet mine, a mix of exasperation and tolerance clear in her
gaze.
“I didn’t realize being a crystal guardian required such grace,” she quips.
I raise an eyebrow.
“Well, grace comes naturally to some of us. It’s an art form, really,” I reply, a
smirk tugging at the corners of my lips.
Ardyn rolls her eyes, but I can sense the undercurrent of tension between us.
Our words carry more weight than jokes. We’re both aware of the growing
distance, the polar magnetic force pushing between us.
I reach for my tarot deck, shuffling the cards with deliberate intent. The
soothing swish of the cards fills the air.
She notices the intensity of my stare and smiles.
“Planning to consult your spirits before lighting the candles, Clover?” she
teases. “Isn’t that against the witch code?”
I huff out a laugh, the sound tight. “The spirits have already been whispering
their secrets to me.” I nail her with a look. “I just need the right moment to
unleash their voices.”
Ardyn shifts uncomfortably, as if I actually have the power to dive into her
head and pull out the skeletons hiding there.
She clears her throat. “Well, don’t keep them waiting too long. You wouldn’t
want the spirits to think you’re playing hard to get.”
I lean back, holding the tarot deck lightly between my fingertips. “I can’t
light the candles until the chandeliers are turned off. Sarah Anderton
wouldn’t appreciate the two sources of light after she’s been in the dark for
so long.”
“Uh-huh. Right.”
I tense at Ardyn’s placating tone—or pretend interest—it’s hard to tell which
it is, considering she’s working hard to cover her nerves.
She’s always been a terrible liar.
“Could you shut off the lights on your way out?” I ask, hoping my question
will nudge her toward the exit.
“Are you sure you want to be alone?”
