This damn book.
Betha stared at the cover, wishing she could just get rid of it. She
had taken to carrying the scrapbook from her mother in her bag. The
therapist she had seen since the funeral didn’t think it was odd but that it
might be part of her healing process. While she was glad Grandpappy had
found a therapist for both her and Angie, she was frustrated at how little
progress she seemed to have made and wished she could feel better more
quickly.

The sound of the coffee shop was relaxing. That was why she sat inside.
That and the fact that her favorite table was outside in the drizzly rain. The
warm fall was turning to winter. Snow would come soon, and no matter
how warm her hoodie was, she would need to switch to a heavier jacket.
The rain couldn’t wash away the destruction in town or across campus.
Betha shook her head and tried to push those thoughts away. Thinking
about the battle wasn’t a good thing. She wasn’t ready for that. Just
ignoring the horror of the struggle wasn’t the best strategy, but it worked
most of the time.
“Vanilla latte, right?” asked a familiar voice.
Betha’s head snapped away from the window. Susan from her
economics class was holding out a mug. “Yeah, I’d love another one,”
Betha said. Her thoughts focused on what had happened and how Susan had
helped. “But I guess you knew that, right?”
Susan blushed and motioned to the chair. “Can I take a seat? We should
chat.”
“That sounds ominous, but then again, what’s the worst that can
happen?” muttered Betha.
Susan set the full coffee mug next to Betha’s empty one and took the
empty chair. “You shouldn’t tempt the goddesses of fate like that. They
seem to have a weird sense of humor.”
“That’s true,” Betha replied, thinking of her own junior year so far.
“I wanted to apologize for deceiving you when we met on your first
day,” said Susan. “I knew we had to meet for that conversation to happen.
Otherwise, worse things were going to happen.” Susan gave her a soft
smile, but her fingers kept fiddling with her to-go cup.
Betha tried to remember what Susan was talking about, but then it hit
her. Susan had mentioned she should get her Traveler’s mark checked out at
the medical center on campus. That comment from Susan had sent her to
the med center where she’d discovered she was a Traveler. Everything else
followed from there. If that hadn’t happened, then she wouldn’t have been
at the nightclub and Kyra wouldn’t have been nearby. Dots connected inside
her head.
“Holy smokes. It all stemmed from that. You knew?” Betha leaned back
in her chair, barely breathing. That one moment had changed everything.
That was terrifying.
