--- --- --- --- ---
If I’m going to die, I’m bound and determined to at least get a
memorable headline out of it. Woman Masturbates Herself into Heart
Attack, Goes Out with a Bang. I’d even take Buried Alive by
Disgruntled Beavers. But I draw the line at Dumbass Thief Gets Eaten by
Guard Dog.
I swear, I canvassed the stupid place three times in the past week, and
there wasn’t a single trace of a dog anywhere in that damn building.
Sprinting through the underbrush, thorns nip at my flesh, but I keep
running. When the thundering reverberation of the husky’s footfalls travel
through the earth into my back paws, I dive into the nearest thicket, using
my small size to my advantage. Heart threatening to pound out of my chest,
I pivot, inching backward while keeping the murderous beast firmly in my
sights.
Pure excitement shines back at me as the moonlight illuminates his
bright blue eyes. Satisfaction sparks in them as he manages to fight through
enough to rake the tip of his nails down my shoulder, desperate to pull me
out. Wincing, I shrink away, mentally running through my options. The
security guard’s voice is getting closer as he calls out, searching for his dog.
If he finds me with the flash drive, I’m fucked six ways to Sunday.
And not in the fun way.
Hastily digging a small hole in the dirt, I spit the flash drive in and bury
it. If I’m caught with my ass hanging out, sure, it’ll be awkward, but he
won’t be able to pin anything on me. Taking a deep breath, I wait until the
dog wriggles deeper into the thicket and bolt out of the other side. Beelining
for the tree up ahead, I make a running leap for the branch and shift back
mid-air. With a grunt on impact, I awkwardly sling a leg over the branch
and haul myself up, immediately regretting it.
“At least buy a girl dinner first,” I grumble, pulling a massive splinter
out of my inner thigh that came dangerously close to requiring an awkward
ER visit.
His bark gives me a split-second warning to yank my foot up as the
Siberian husky jumps. He looks like he thinks we’re just playing the best
game of chase in his life, so I can’t swear he’d actually use my leg as a
chew toy, but I’m not willing to call his bluff and risk it. Knowing my luck I
still smell like a rabbit, and he’d be all too happy to drag his prey home to
proudly show off to his owner.
“Get out of here,” I hiss, shoving my tangled mess of shoulder length,
silver hair out of my face. Snapping off a twig, I throw it as far as I can.
“Fetch!”
He doesn’t make a move to hunt down the stick, but he does pause and
cock his head as, “Titan!” rings out far too close for comfort.
Dancing around in excitement, he begins barking in earnest, resuming
his efforts with a newfound burst of enthusiasm.
