MARLEY
Five years ago…
Tonight was one of the most annoying fucking nights of my life.
A true nightmare, if you will.
Not only was I the maid of honor for my childhood best friend, who was
marrying my most recent ex-boyfriend, but they hired me as the event
planner.

The planner for my own personal hell.
I forced myself to remain sober all evening since I was technically
working the event, but I wasn’t sure how much more of this bullshit I could
take while wearing a fake-ass smile the whole time.
A hand reached out, touching my shoulder. “How are you holding up,
Mar?”
At least it was someone I wanted to see. I turned around and pulled my
twin sister, Avery, into a hug. She was the other maid of honor for this
shitshow.
“Do I look as miserable as I feel?” I asked.
Avery pulled back a bit, keeping her grasp on my arms while she
examined my face. “I’m sure the average person can’t tell. But I’m your
sister, and what I see makes me wonder if you’ve poisoned their wedding
cake.”
Narrowing my eyes, I stepped out of her embrace and rolled my eyes.
“Hilarious. You know I wouldn’t last in jail.”
She threw her head back, laughing. “Ain’t that the truth.”
Avery joined me as I finished doing my rounds as the planner. The
catered dinner went off without a hitch—the food was delicious, and all the
vendors had been paid and tipped.
The only thing left was for the wedding to
end and for the cleanup crew to do the rest of the hard work. But before all
that could happen, I had to deal with the toasts and the endless hours of
dancing. And trust me, I had nothing to say in a toast, so hopefully, people
would believe the greeting-card-style bullshit I’d be spewing tonight.
As if on cue, the DJ cut the music and announced that the bride and
groom would like to say a few words before the toasts began.
Great. Just great.
I stood off to the side, listening as they droned on about how thankful
they were that their friends and family could join them on their special day
and how blessed they were to find each other.
Gag me.
Avery and I shared a look, our eyes rolling at the same time my name was
called on the microphone. Turning my attention back toward the platform the
newlyweds stood on, my eyes met with Alison’s as she placed her right hand
over her heart and addressed me.
“Marley, honey, I want to thank you for not only being in my wedding
but for taking on the role of my wedding planner.” Her arm gestured to the
space we were in. “This wedding would not have happened without you.”
Yeah, for several reasons.
Giving a slight nod, I forced a smile. Alison paused and made a show of
dabbing the corners of her eyes with a tissue. I’d hoped she’d end it after that,
but she had to continue.
“Most importantly, Marley, if you hadn’t given up Jerin when you did,
none of this would have happened. Your breakup brought Jerin and me
together, and I can’t thank you enough.”
Oh, fuck this.
