LAYLA
The Blingwood Beach Resort: Escape, unwind, and experience
paradise.
I roll my eyes at the hotel website’s tall claims and then tuck my phone
back into the silk pouch of my wedding purse.

--- --- --- --- ---
After fleeing the wedding, I drove around aimlessly wondering where to
go. I even slept in my car last night while I figured it out. I can’t face
returning to Jonathon’s place, and I can’t go to my mother’s. Her husband
Roy has a model railway taking up most of their guest room and my
mother’s cats sleep in the other spare room. Besides, after her insisting I
marry Jonathon, even after we had proof he cheated, I’m too angry to even
answer her calls.
In a moment of utter desperation, I call Skyla, and even though she is on
her honeymoon, she answers. I confirm Mr. Blingwood still needs a PA and
that the job still includes the on-site apartment. The excitement in her voice
should be deterring me, but I am too grateful to allow my concern to
overwhelm me.
Here I am, Sunday morning, the day after fleeing my wedding, and I’m
rolling toward the resort still in my wedding dress. The ocean view outside
my open window is so breathtaking it brings heavy, fat tears to my eyes.
I’ve been a fool.
I no longer know if I am speeding away from my past or speeding
toward something new, but I stop when I see my destination.
Atop of huge, white pillars stands the sign marking the Blingwood
Beach Resort. And if I wasn’t intimidated by that, what lies beyond it surely
rattles my insides. Manicured gardens, untarnished by even a single
dandelion, weaves a meandering path to the beach, which is set up with an
altar and seating for a lavish wedding.
It seems like a sick joke, speeding away from my own wedding, only to
arrive at someone else’s.
I don’t dither or dissect how my life became such a shitshow. Instead, I
follow the road that snakes around the ornamental water feature to the
building marked Reception. I stop behind a line of cars—Mercedes,
Lamborghinis, and Aston Martins—each car and their owners are being
attended to by sharply dressed valets. My cell vibrates across the passenger
seat from inside my purse, so I turn it off and get out of the car, tossing the
keys to the valet and taking the ticket he gives me.
“Welcome to the Blingwood Resort, ma’am,” the concierge says. “Are
you the bride for today’s wedding?”
“No, that’s not my wedding,” I reply gesturing to the wedding
paraphernalia outside.
He stares at me, confused.
“Are you meeting your husband here?” he asks, once again gawking
down at my wedding dress and shoes.
“Nope. No husband.”
Unfortunately his questions continue. “Have you stayed with us here in
Santa Barbara before?”
“No, but the internet speaks very highly of you,” I reply and then glance
down at his badge and politely tack on his name Doug. He’s a big guy with
an even bigger smile and I wonder what he’s so happy about.
“Come right this way. Sally will get you checked in.”
