--- --- --- --- ---
Prince Dorian was a big fan of the color green.
Dark green, light green, sage green, grass green–he was fond of
every shade. That was why, when dealing with potentially unpleasant
business, he preferred to be out in the garden. Then at least the
unpleasantness was tempered by the variety of greens surrounding him.
When the business in question was pleasant, the greenery simply added to
the enjoyment.
It was a sentiment his father would never understand, preferring the
opulence of the gold and velvet furnishings in the castle to nature’s beauty.
“Presentation is everything,” the king of Anura would say. “If you want to
be treated like a ruler, you must look like a ruler. You have to spend money
to make money.” This particular philosophy was the reason why the
country’s finances were in shambles.
It was also why Dorian was left going about the unpleasant business of

at the height of summer, the wildflowers would be in full bloom. He loved
the variety of colors and shapes of both the flowers and the leaves, but he
had strict instructions from his father to keep to the roses.
Presentation was everything, after all.
Dorian clasped his hands behind his back as they slowly meandered along
the path. He struggled to find something to talk about more than the inane
pleasantries they had already shared about the weather. Unlike his father, he
was not a natural conversationalist.
A nature conservationist, perhaps, but not a natural conversationalist.
Dorian smiled and chuckled softly to himself at his own joke.
“Is something amusing, Prince Dorian?”
Dorian quickly collected himself. In his limited experience with Princess
Belinda, she seemed, like his father, to be much more interested in
appearances and pretenses than wordplay. “Just a stray thought, Your
Highness, regarding the…flowers.”
It was close enough.
The visiting princess raised one of her perfectly manicured brows. “I
didn’t realize flowers could be quite so interesting.” She smoothed a
