Shade watched her mother’s breathing. The doctors had told her that she was
in critical condition and that they didn’t expect her to make it through the
night. Shade was a registered nurse in the emergency department at a hospital
in Columbus.

--- --- --- --- ---
She’d seen these sorts of burns before. Mostly on young
children caught in house fires when the family would use space heaters in
their homes to keep warm. So she knew that her mother wasn’t going to be
going anywhere with her when she passed. It shattered her heart to think just
how very close they’d come to being free of her father.
The officer, Officer Tony Bandit, that had been on the scene, first told
her that he’d find someone responsible to keep an eye on her sisters and
brother. Then about ten minutes ago, he told her that he’d gotten Cliff Tate to
take them in until she could make other arrangements. He assured her that he
was a good man and wouldn’t harm them.
Arrangements with who? She only knew a few people in her department
at work even though she’d done her clinical there as well as worked there for
the last five years. None of the neighbors that she’d lived next door to all her
life had been anyone she could have called on. Her father, a bastard of a man,
had kept their mom locked up all the time so she couldn’t tell on him. So
when mom had gotten the chance to leave him, with her help, there wasn’t
anyone that would help them get out.
“Ms. Cornwall?” She turned to the nurse that had been in and out since
she’d been brought to her mother. “The doctor said for you to keep on top of
your pain, or you’ll be out when your momma needs you most. I’m here to
give you a little something to keep you from hurting too badly if you’ll take
it.”
Getting the medication through her IV, she was glad that it did indeed
take the edge off her pain. While she didn’t want to suffer, she wasn’t going
to miss being with her mom in the event that she woke, even for a few
seconds. As soon as the nurse left her, her mom did wake and look at her
through the gauze that was wrapped around most of her face and neck to
protect the burns. Mom had gotten the worst of it as the cocktail her father
had thrown in the car had landed on her lap when it went off.
“You’ll care for them, won’t you, Shade?” She said that the kids would
be her priority. “I love you, daughter. Very much.”
Her mom nodded and then closed her eyes. She watched the monitor as it
blipped out for a second, then came back on. Mom looked at her again.
Forever a fighter, her mother was.
