Days like today were not what Chris Davis was used to so early in
the year. Back home, parts of the mountains would still be covered
with snow. Warm days like this would have come along in June, maybe not
even till the Fourth of July.

--- --- --- --- ---
Shaking his head, he adjusted his hands on the steering wheel. “Grow up,
you big baby,” he chided himself as he turned off the dirt ranch road toward
town. “Besides, it’s not like you moved to New Mexico or something. Now
that would have been hot. This is home now.”
As he came over the long rolling hill, he had to admit his best friend and
business partner’s hometown was the perfect place to call home. From this
spot in the road, he had a bird’s-eye view of Saint Cloud, Texas. The small
town stretched out in a shape that some people called a banana and others
preferred to call a smile. Either way, their own bit of heaven. He had to
agree.
Though, Chris thought of it more as a smirk. The west side of town curved
upward, following the “line” of the lips created by the Rio Plata that
bisected most of the town. He was coming in on the inner curve of the
Northside, the neighborhood that traditionally housed those ranch hands
who didn’t live on the cattle ranches that had once been the biggest
economic engine in town.
Turning left, he drove through the Northside toward downtown, thoroughly
charmed by his surroundings. Rio Plata Drive was lined with cottage-like
small single-family houses, sprinkled with splattering of bright-colored
flowers, children’s toys, and the requisite small-town front porch rocking
chairs. He loved the lack of self-contained subdivisions he thought had
made people more insular and isolated. Instead, the Northside homes
meandered through the neighborhood with all the streets either leading to
Rio Plata Drive or to Schneider Boulevard. Unlike big cities, there were no
convenience stores or fast food joints to interrupt the decorative line of
homes.
Reaching the historical downtown, Chris parked by Saint Cloud Fire
Station. Firefighters were in front washing two of the bright red trucks.
Chris fought hard to resist the temptation to check out the fire engines. As a
kid, he’d fantasized about being a firefighter, riding in to put out the rising
flames and save the day for a family who could have lost their home. Life
had led him on a different path.
Today, he had things to take care of. Reaching into the back seat of his
pickup truck, he pulled out the leather briefcase that, in his mind, looked so
out of place.
Dressed in jeans and a button-down short-sleeved shirt, he had to ask
himself, what was he doing carrying a thousand-dollar briefcase? But for
now, it was all he had.
Chris, his brothers, and, of course, Simon, his best friend and partner, the
reason they were all here, were eager to start their new lives. After filing the
quit-claim deed, he moved on to the next thing on their to-do list, delivering
the septic system inspection report confirming the property was not a health
and safety hazard to inhabit.
