Why on earth Aria Callas had thought coming out to a bar tonight
was a good idea, she had no clue. It couldn’t be because the brown
slatted walls and strong stench of beer and male cologne had drawn her in.
And it certainly couldn’t be that she’d wanted to pull on these skin-tight jeans
and heels that made her feet ache.
She sipped her drink. It was a Brown Derby, one of the only cocktails on
the menu here at Lenny’s Bar and Grill.

She shot a look at the empty barstool beside her. You’d think by now,
she’d have made at least a couple of friends here in Lindeman, Washington.
Even one. She’d been here for a whole freaking year. But running an online
fitness business, creating exercise routines for women, didn’t exactly get her
out, about and mingling with the locals.
Gah. She took another sip, watching Lenny hand a beer to a woman down
at the other end of the bar. Could she consider Lenny a friend? It would
definitely help her feel less pathetic. They chatted whenever she was here.
Sure, it was probably out of pity because she was always alone, but hey,
she’d take what she could get.
The man stroked his long, bushy beard, which hit his belly. He had a
sleeve of tattoos and an ear piercing. In his younger years, he’d probably
been really good-looking. That edgy, dangerous kind of good-looking.
As if he felt her eyes on him, he looked her way. His smile lifted her
mood a notch.
He moved down the bar toward her. “What’s on your mind, girly?”
That was a loaded question. “Oh, you know, just contemplating my life
decisions. As you do at a bar.” Not all her life decisions. God, that would
give her a complex.
He slung a towel over his shoulder. “How’s that going for you?”
Her lips quirked. “Does it ever go well for anyone?”
“Nope.”
“Didn’t think so.” Her gaze caught on the wood-slatted walls again.
“Hey, you ever thought about bringing some color into this place? Adding
some color, or maybe a nice modern stone?”
“Not once.”
Fair enough. “Well, if you change your mind, I know a fabulous design
—”
“No.” He leaned over the bar. “I’ve owned and run this bar for forty
years. Haven’t had a single complaint till you waltzed your skinny butt in
here.”
Aria grinned. “So you waited forty years for your design angel?”
He huffed, but she saw the hint of a smile on his face. What the hell, she
was gonna call it. The guy was officially on her friends list.
When his gaze landed on something over her shoulder, she turned her
head.
The smile slipped from her lips. Oh God. What was he doing here?
Cole stepped into the bar, closely followed by two other men who looked
just as dark, handsome and dangerous. The guy had recently moved in across
the street from her. She was pretty sure one of the men with him lived there,
too.
