“I know you’re upset.” Zoe pressed the latch to remove the carrier
from its stroller base but not before giving both Vincent and Michael a kiss
on the tips of their noses. She ran her hand down the side of each of their
heads. “I’m so sorry. We will find Leonardo. I promise. Now, I need you
both to behave like the good boys you are while we are in the police station.”
She picked up the carrier rather than wait for a response from either of them
and made her way up the front steps.

She scanned the small, plain lobby. “I need to make a mental note to
drop off a painting and maybe one of my sculptures to liven up this room,”
she whispered to herself as she rushed up to the glass window and banged on
it with the knuckles of one hand, clutching the carrier in the other. “Hello!
Please, I need to speak with Colin McGregor. It’s an emergency!”
The desk sergeant looked up from his computer screen, and after a
narrowing of his eyes over his generous nose, slid the glass back that
separated them. “Name?”
“Zoe Dupree. And it’s an emergency. I need to speak to Detective
McGregor immediately. Can you please let him know that Leonardo DaVinci
is missing?” She pulled her lower lip between her teeth as she peeked down
at the car carrier and gave Vincent and Michael the bravest smile she could
muster under the circumstances.
The desk sergeant’s eyebrows shot up toward his hairline. “Miss,
Leonardo DaVinci is dead.”
“What!” Zoe’s shriek echoed through the police department lobby,
causing the desk sergeant to jerk back in his chair. “No! It can’t be. You have
to be mistaken! He’s only been missing for an hour. Please, I need to speak to
Colin.” She cried in earnest, hugging the carrier to her.
The desk sergeant stood up from his perch behind the desk and stared
at her, his mouth gaping open. “Miss, are those dogs in that carrier? Dogs are
not allowed in the police station. You’ll need to leave them outside.”
Zoe shook her head, clutching the carrier tighter. “Outside? I can’t
leave them outside! Don’t you understand? Leo is already missing, and Vince
and Michael are distraught. Please call Detective Colin for me. Please.” Her
voice trembled as she pulled a purple and yellow tie-dye hankie from her
matching bag and delicately dabbed at her eyes.
The desk sergeant shook his head in bewilderment. “Must be another
one of McGregor’s crazy informants,” he muttered. “Last week two women
claiming to own a mattress store came in with some crazy story about a
robbery and now this loon. Where does the D-three find these crazy people?”
