Ridge stood outside his cousin’s house and knocked. His smile grew
when the old man opened the door.
“Hello, Mr. Marsh. It’s so good to see you.”
Ridge stepped into the house and patted the man on the shoulder.
“Hello, Elder. Have you decided to leave this shack and move in with me
yet?”

Elder’s mouth twitched. “I’m sorry, Sir, but Mr. Darian needs me
here.”
Ridge grinned. “But I need you more.”
“Hey!”
Ridge turned and chuckled.
“Are you trying to take Elder from me again?” Darian asked.
“Hell, yeah, and I’ll keep trying.”
Darian snorted, came forward, and hugged him.
“It’s good to see you,” he told Darian.
“It’s been too long.”
“We both need to make an effort. I know we’re busy with our
businesses, but we’re family.”
Darian nodded. “I agree.”
“Will there be anything else, Sir?” Elder asked.
Ridge nodded. “Yes, go pack a bag.”
“You’re not taking him. This place would seriously fall apart
without him.”
“You’re just being selfish. Right now, I need him a lot more than
you do.”
“Oh, what’s going on?” Darian asked.
“That’s what I came to talk to you about.”
Darian smiled at Elder. “Thank you, Elder. The only thing you can
do for me is hide so he doesn’t squirrel you away.”
Elder bowed. “It won’t happen, Sir. You are stuck with me.”
“Good.”
Ridge sighed dramatically. “I’ll keep trying.”
“I’m sure you will, Sir. Have a good day.” The older man turned and
walked off.
“You, too, Elder.”
Darian slapped him on the back. “Let’s go in the office.”
Ridge heard high-pitched laughter and screams. “What’s that?”
“That’s Larkin and a few of her friends. They’re having a pool
party.”
“By themselves?”
Darian snorted. “Of course not. Gage and Kaleb are out there.”
Ridge rolled his eyes. “That sounds more like you.”
Darian grunted. “I’ll introduce you to the girls later.”
“I’m looking forward to finally meeting Larkin.”
Darian leaned back. “She’s pretty special.”
“I’m glad you found her.”
Darian nodded and shut the door behind them. “I do, too.” He went
around his desk and took a seat while Ridge sat in one of the chairs on the
other side, took off his cowboy hat, and set it on his knee.
“So, tell me what’s going on?”
Ridge sighed. “I’ve lost two of my best men and a woman. One of
the men retired, and the other moved closer to his mom to care for her. I’ve
lost my housekeeper, Tina. She got married and moved away with her
husband.”
“What about Mrs. Cox?”
“She can’t do the cleaning anymore, so now I’ve got no one for that.
She still cooks for me, but that might even be too much for her. She’s
getting up in years, so I’ve no idea how long it will be before she retires.”
Darian frowned. “Do you still have your foreman and barn cook?”
“Thank God I’ve still got both of them, or I would have had a
nervous breakdown.”
Darian snickered. “How many employees do you have now?”
“Altogether, about thirty.”
Darian’s eyes widened. “Wow.”
