I lived in a small yellow house outside of Arlington, an even smaller
town than Blakely. Arlington has one stoplight, a grocery store, a bank, a
dollar store, and a gas station. The town used to be a vibrant community
that catered to the farms that spread out from it for miles in every direction.
Now, along with Blakely, it was a hub of preternatural activity.

--- --- --- --- ---
My uncle owned a small farm that surrounded his house. He lived a
simple life in his yellow house, running his 700-acre farm from a shop and
two barns behind it. Following my parent’s death, he invited me to live with
him. He taught me the ins and outs of farming. I learned quickly and
worked hard to repay his kindness. Uncle Gabe was a hard man who
tolerated very little outside of his narrow worldview, but he loved family.
When I had nowhere to go, he came to my rescue.
Half an hour after we left the remains of Moe’s bar, we drove up
Uncle Gabe’s driveway. I couldn’t stifle the nervousness that I felt looking
at the yellow house. Moe’s bar had been a casualty of the people chasing
me. Would my uncle’s house be next?
“Hurry. They’re going to be looking for you,” Moe said from the
driver’s seat.
I nodded, opening the passenger door before running towards the
front porch and bounding up the steps to the door.
Inside, Uncle Gabe sat at a wooden table that faced the door, a cup
of coffee in one hand and a newspaper in the other. He wore worn blue
overalls, a flannel shirt, and a green ball cap with a yellow tractor logo on
it. His tan, weathered skin and gray beard made him look older than he
actually was. Years of hard work had given him a solid frame with wide
shoulders. Just last spring, I had seen him lift two 100-pound bags of seed
at once and carry them halfway across a field.
“You’re late,” he said in a way of greeting, not looking up from the
paper.
“Sorry, Unc.” I walked over to the table and took a seat.
“We got to get that plow fixed. Joey and George are working on it.”
Joey and George were two of the hands that worked for Uncle Gabe
and lived on the farm. They were the only thing that made me feel
somewhat better about what I was about to do. At least Uncle Gabe
wouldn’t be alone. “Unc, I’ve got to leave for a couple of days. Something’s
come up, and I need to deal with it.”
Uncle Gabe’s expression darkened. He looked up from the
newspaper. “You in trouble?”
I shook my head. “Not with the law.”
He grimaced, genuine concern crossing his features. “Alex, I told
you to give up that nonsense for good reason.”
I wanted to roll my eyes but resisted the urge. For once, he was
right. He had told me to stay away from magic. My last fourteen hours lent
credence to his warning.
