The Wettest Dreams
NIGHT WIND TOssEs the curtains at my back as a moon too large for
comfort shimmers over gardens that look frosty in this light. The balcony’s
cold marble isn’t as assaulting as it was on the way to the roof now that
Arrik’s warmth cradles my feet. I wonder if his hands are cold because of it.
I wonder if he’ll take his magic with him when he leaves.
His inked silhouette remains against the balcony rail, where it hasn’t
moved since telling me to wait a few seconds ago.
“Arrik?” I prod.

--- --- --- --- ---
His face is hard to read beneath the blanket of his own shadow. The
smoke around him coils like a snake against the moon. I feel the brush of
his lips on my ear, though he’s nowhere near it. “Dolly Jones,” he whispers
in that secret way that always makes it sound like he’s talking to me in bed.
“I wish you’d answer my next question truthfully.”
“Arrik,” I say tiredly, glancing behind me to the sheeny fabric guarding
my suite, knowing Velis is cozy inside where I left him, knowing I’m not
about to roleplay with his problematic older brother while he sleeps. “I am
not the genie in this relationshi—”
My words catch because a flash of blue has just gone off in my face.
Blink. Blink.
“What was that?”
Arrik merely grinds the ember tip of his cigarette against the balcony
banister. A burst of shadow erupts from where he stands, and I startle
backward because he’s suddenly before me, close enough to feel the heat
rolling off his flower-inked chest, the musky smell of his cologne forcing its
way into my nostrils. Eyes sharp, he looks down at me like a sphinx about
to punish me for failing to solve his riddle, while his mouth shows a hint of
his teeth to remind me they exist to nibble.
He lands a hand against the wall my shoulders are butted up to and
leans down so that his wintery gaze is stamped on mine while the moonlight
shines over the hollows of his cheeks.
“Dolly.” His voice is no longer in my ear. “Have you ever thought about
us hooking up?”
A clementine-sized lump clogs my throat.
Seriously?! After the conversation we just had on the roof?!
“Are you kidding me, Ar—” An intense pressure pulses from the
bottom of my windpipe, blocking up the rest of my sentence and heaving
out the word “Yes!” in its place.
