“I’m sorry. What did you just say?” I stared at Mrs. Rhodes as
my heart raced.

--- --- --- --- ---
“This is Evelyn, but she goes by Ella.”
I looked down at the little girl with long brown hair and blue eyes.
Looking back at my brothers, they sat there as shocked as I was.
“Can I speak with you in my office, Mrs. Rhodes?”
“Of course.”
“Come here, sweetheart.” Conner held out his hand. “I’m your Uncle
Conner, this is your Uncle Jackson, and this is your cousin Shaun.”
“It’s okay, Ella. You can go to them. I’m going to have a word with your
father,” Mrs. Rhodes spoke.
Jesus. The word made me shudder.
“What the hell is going on here?” I sternly spoke as we walked to my
office. “There is no way that little girl in there is my daughter.”
“I’m sorry, Dr. Kind, but Natalie Baker has listed you as Ella’s father on
the birth certificate.”
We walked into my office, and I shut the door. I paced around the room,
running my hand through my hair as I tried to get a grip on what was
happening.
“Again. There is no way that kid is mine.” I pointed. “And who just
comes to a place of business and springs that on someone?” I voiced loudly.
My office door opened, and Jackson stepped inside.
“Bro, calm down.” He placed his hand on my shoulder.
“I tried to call you, and I’ve left two voice messages,” Mrs. Rhodes
spoke. “You never returned my calls.”
“I never got any calls or voice messages from you!” I shouted.
“Nathan. Calm down,” Jackson said. “Let’s all have a seat and discuss
this.”
“Dr. Kind, did you have sexual intercourse with Natalie Baker?”
“Yes. A couple of times. That was years ago! I haven’t seen or heard
from her since.”
“I’m sorry. I know this is difficult to take in.”
“You have no idea, lady.” I shook my head.
“The fact is that Natalie listed you as Ella’s father on her birth certificate.
The child doesn’t have any other family.”
“Where are you from anyway?” I narrowed my eye.
“Child Welfare and Protection Services in New York City.”
“Natalie probably lied on the birth certificate,” I said. “She probably
didn’t know who the father was, so she just put my name down. Don’t you
think it’s odd that she never told me?”
“Women keep secrets for all kinds of reasons, Dr. Kind. A simple
paternity test will confirm whether or not Ella is your daughter. I’ve turned
this case over to the Los Angeles Child Welfare and Protection Services.
John Kelp will be in touch with you tomorrow to go over some things. I need
to get back to New York.”
“And what the hell am I supposed to do?”
“Take Ella home and care for her. I’ve brought her suitcase with some of
her things.”
“I don’t know the first thing about raising a kid,” I shouted, and Jackson
placed his hand on my shoulder.
