THE PRESENT
MONDAY
Good friends and delicious lattes. I dare you to find a more iconic duo.
Thankfully, I can find both of these at Spill the Beans. Our local coffee
shop makes the best matcha lattes I’ve ever tasted. I would gladly walk in
every day and give them all my money in exchange for their drinks—and
I’m not just saying that because my best friend and her fiancé own the
place.

--- --- --- --- ---
Most days, Evie is hiding in the back office, but today, I’ve pulled her
away from the endless paperwork that comes with running a small business.
We’re tucked away in a booth toward the back of the store discussing some
last-minute wedding plans. She’s getting married next week, and I’ve
agreed to do her floral arrangements and bouquets.
Is it a little ambitious to be her florist and her maid of honor? Maybe,
but Evie is my best friend—has been my best friend for almost a decade.
There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for her. Not only will I be the best
bridesmaid in the whole world, but she’ll also have the best flowers in
Belview. This will be the best wedding ever and I can’t wait!
“Okay,” I say, taking a sip of my drink. “So after talking to the
suppliers, I really think you should replace the tulips with ranunculus.
They’re a little more expensive, but are more vibrant, and give a funkier
vibe without being too trendy.”
Evie’s dark hair is in a messy bun on the top of her head. It bobs back
and forth when she shakes her head. “Macy, I literally do not care what you
decide to do. I could walk down the aisle with a Publix bouquet and be
happy.”
Even though I know she won’t do it, my eyes widen in horror. Flowers
from the grocery store are fine for a weekly pick-me-up. They’re fine for
small holidays if you don’t need something with a personal touch. But they
are absolutely not okay for your wedding day.
“You are not walking down the aisle with something that costs the same
price as a latte. I refuse to let you.”
She laughs as she wipes away some water from the table with a napkin.
“I appreciate your concern, I do, but I want you to enjoy this next week
with me, not stress because you’re overthinking every stem and piece of
greenery.”
“What if I promise not to overthink it?”
“Is that even possible for you?” She rolls her eyes at me before they go
to the table where her phone buzzes. The screen lights up with multiple text
messages. A crease forms between her brows as she reads them silently.
“Everything okay?”
She shakes her head. “Mom is freaking out. Something about Nate, but
there are so many typos I can’t figure out what she’s trying to say.” Her
fingers tap across the screen as she responds.
Nate.
For her, it’s one syllable in a long string of other words. The same
cannot be said for me. Just the sound of his name makes my breath catch.
She’s still looking at her phone when it buzzes again.
