Fangs plunges you deeper into a brutal, post-apocalyptic world where survival isn’t just physical but emotional. The story picks up after the fallout of the first book, showing how the heroine, Bones (aka Ember Cutler), is haunted by trauma and guilt. The brutality of the setting—and the horrors she continues to endure—are not toned down; they’re written in a way that hurts, that feels raw. Speer doesn’t shy away from exploring the weight of despair, the grinding cycle of fear, and the way even kindness can feel dangerous when you’re broken.
What makes Fangs emotionally compelling is how it handles its characters. Bones is deeply wounded, and yet her moments of strength, her capacity to surprise herself, shine through. Her relationships—with Wolf, Mac, her found family, and even the shadow of her brother—are complicated, tense, and evolving. As she tries to untangle who she is apart from all she’s experienced, the narrative gives space to her grief, her fear, and yes, even hope. The author gives her, and those around her, moments of vulnerability that feel earned; the found family aspect is deeply satisfying, giving the story heart amid all its darkness.
That said, Fangs isn’t an easy read. The pacing drags in parts (especially in the middle), due to recurring trauma loops and emotional turmoil, which can feel repetitive at times. Also, readers who hope for clarity about magic systems, power structures, or romantic resolution may feel a little frustrated—it teases more than answers in many directions. But for those willing to sit with discomfort, with uncertainty, the payoff in the later chapters is powerful. The stakes ramp up, the truths unravel, and the tension between past identity vs. what Bones has become becomes unignorable. Overall, Fangs is a dark, painful, yet hauntingly beautiful continuation, best for those who don’t mind being wrecked a little in the process—but also for those who believe there’s something to heal.
