My hands shook as I read the note over and over again, the
meaning harder to digest than understand. I had taken a photo of
the note before my husband, Det. Luke Morgan, left with it and Cat
O’Conner, a local crime podcaster. She had come to our house late in the
evening and delivered the note that had been left at her studio.

Our friends, Cooper Deagnan and Adele Baker, had been here listening
to an episode of Cat’s podcast, Rock City Killers, that featured Luke and
one of his cases. The merriment of the occasion had been silenced by the
note. If we had any thought it might have been a sick joke, those hopes
were quickly dashed when Luke called the police station and found out
there had been a shooting – which is what the note indicated would happen.
All we knew was that two people had been shot by what appeared to be
a sniper and one of them had died. As head of the homicide division, Luke
would be needed at the scene. He left immediately with Cat. Cooper and
Adele followed, wanting to get back downtown to their loft, not far from
where the shooting happened.
I had offered to let them spend the night to avoid the onslaught of police
and onlookers, but Adele was defending a three-time repeat burglar in court
the next morning and still had to prepare. She also was worried about
accessing her law office, which wasn’t even a full block away from the
shooting.
That left me alone to read and reread the note.
The summer of 1977 in New York City has gone down in infamy. Record
heat. A blackout. Murder. Tomorrow night, I will continue what he started.
No one is safe. I own this city. Fear me.
The note had been dated yesterday, which made sense why the shooting
happened tonight. It appeared the sniper followed through with his plan.
It had taken me by surprise that I had been the only one who knew the
reference in the note. Although we were living in Little Rock, Arkansas, I
was born and raised in Troy, New York, about two and a half hours north of
New York City. I didn’t think there was a New Yorker around who hadn’t at
least heard of the Son of Sam murders.
While the note referenced the summer of 1977, David Berkowitz’s reign
of terror in New York City had started before that. On Christmas Eve 1975,
he severely injured a fifteen-year-old girl with a hunting knife and stabbed
another woman who had never been identified. He had also started
hundreds of fires across the boroughs of the city. A diary indicated he had
started more than fourteen hundred fires – he was never caught for those.
The crimes he is most infamous for, and the ones this sniper was
referencing, started on July 29, 1976, when he shot two young women in
the Pelham Bay neighborhood of the Bronx, in the early morning hours as
they sat in a car talking after a night out. He fired three shots and walked
away.
