Sona grabbed her sister’s suitcase and walked her to the door. “Go,
Isla, before you miss your flight.” She gave her a quick hug. “The kids and I
will be fine. Don’t worry about us.”
“It’s a lot for me to ask of you, and since you don’t have kids, you don’t
know.”
Rya threw her arms around her mother’s waist. “I’m almost ten, Mom. I
can help Aunt Sona with the little pain.”
“I’m not a pain,” protested Reece. “And I’m almost seven, so I can
help, too.”
“Besides,” Sona insisted, “they’ll be in school during the day. I just
have to entertain them for a couple hours before they go to bed. Easy,
peasy.”
Rya turned to her aunt. “It’s more than a couple hours after we get out
of school before we go to bed. We’re not babies with a super early bedtime.”
Sona wagged her finger at her niece. “Do you want your mom to leave
or not?”
Reece ran over and gave Isla a hug. “Tell Daddy we said we love him.”
“And that we can’t wait until he comes home.”
“And that we hate the Marines.” Reece slapped his hand over his
mouth.
“No, don’t tell him I said that.”
Isla crouched down and hugged her son. “We only hate the Marines
because they keep him away from us for so long.”
“Go, sis. His three-day pass is going to expire before you get there.”
Isla kissed Sona’s cheek. “It doesn’t even start until tomorrow.”
“And you’re not going to be there if you don’t leave here.”
Isla grabbed her purse. “Okay, I’m gone. You two be good, and you be
careful with my kids.”
“The kittens are fine.”
“Aunt Sona!” Rya groaned. “You’re not supposed to call us that.”
Sona winked at her as she closed the door behind her sister. “I know,
but I like listening to you complain.”
Reece waved to his mom from the window before he turned and
flopped on the couch. He folded his arms in front of him and a tear ran
down his face.
“I don’t know why we couldn’t go.”
Rya hopped up next to him. “Yes, you do. Mom told us. Where Daddy
is stationed right now, kids can’t go. He’s in a battle zone or something.”
Sona plopped down between them, which elicited squeals that she was
going to squish them. “It’s called a hot zone in a very unfriendly place. He’ll
be home soon. It’ll do your mom some good to go see him for a little bit.
It’ll give both of them the strength they need to make it through the end of
his deployment.”
