Desmund ‘Dez’ Tardot sauntered into the Old City Cemetery at the corner
of Rector and Degolia Streets in Placerville, California. Good ol’
Hangtown, he thought as he easily stepped through the solid locked gate, a
skill he called ‘ghosting.’
Placerville was just one of the many Sierra foothill towns the gold rush of
the mid-1800s built up before the big crash of 1929, when the town was left
in shambles. Fast-forward almost one hundred years, and the town was now
considered historic.
“Historic, my ass.” Dez grimaced. How could a town be so historical with
a Peet’s-fucking-Coffee and a KFC within a stone’s throw? Not to mention,
there was a huge Indian casino on the ridgeline now. He wondered what it
had been like in 1853 when his father had been alive.
Dez was ‘P-Ville’ born and raised with thirty-two years as an immortal
resident. His father, Robert Smith Tardot III, had been a tycoon of the gold
rush era. Though he had never struck it rich with the precious metal, Robert
had gotten filthy rich simply by supplying mining gear to the ‘49ers—all

the tools, sluice equipment, clothing, and foul-weather gear. His dad had
predicted all that crap would be sought after, and he had been right based on
supply and demand economics. Robert made huge profits while, in fact,
very few of the miners had struck gold.
Speaking of the crotchety bastard, where was he?
“Dad?” Dez called. “Where you at, Ghostie?” He couldn’t help a sly smile
from spreading. Robert was a well-known local phenomenon. Only Dez
could waltz in here shouting for him and not get run off by the haunt. Of
course, it helped that this phantom was his biological father.
“Over here, son!” a whisper called to him. Dez looked toward the reply
and saw the faint outline of his father’s body about thirty feet ahead. Robert
resembled any Victorian era gentleman, with a tweed suit, dark top hat, and
long mustache, looking like Colonel Mustard; he even sported a monocle
over one eye. As the apparition stood by a tombstone, the fuzzy outline of
distant headstones could be seen through the man’s form.
Dez was too impatient to walk over, so he employed a skill inherited from
his mother. Dez’s molecules flew apart and reformed in front of his father at
the speed of light. This was any demon’s preferred mode of travel, also
called phasing or dematerializing. “I told you not to engage the mortals,
Dad. Are you fucking kidding me right now?”
The apparition finally looked up when his son suddenly stood right next
to him. Robert coughed once into his fist. “I can’t help it, Desmund; the
humans upset me so.”
“Yeah, but tomorrow the Ghost Hunters film crew is coming; you
absolutely have to fall back, Dad. You must fall back! There is nowhere else
for you to go; you’re stuck in this cemetery. Enough people get scared, and
they are gonna bulldoze this whole fucking place! You know about the
