man stepped out of his car. He snapped his hand across his mouth and nose,
trying to hold it at bay, but it was too late. The odor had invaded his sinuses
and would linger there for hours.
Even after all these years he wondered, why did pigs have to be the
boy’s damned hobby? Why couldn’t he be normal and have interests
outside of these disgusting creatures? Of course, Why couldn’t he be normal
was a much bigger question than anyone could answer and the man knew it.
He stared at the dark farmhouse. Even though the sun had set an hour
earlier, no lights were on so the man swiveled his attention toward the barn
which sat a hundred yards away.

“Earl?” the man called, his voice echoing across the flat fields. “Are
you out here?”
He waited, but there was no answer.
“Asshole,” the man muttered.
This was supposed to be a quick trip, dropping off some groceries. He
hadn’t planned on traipsing across the property, wasn’t dressed for it. He
slipped off his suit jacket, worried that too much time in this rancid air
would contaminate it, and tossed it into the back of his Mercedes, beside the
bags of TV dinners and canned goods.
Then he took a long, distraught look at his dress shoes. The Berluti’s
had set him back north of $1,400 and the realization that he’d have to risk
destroying them in this minefield was almost enough to make him get back
in the car and drive away. But that would only lead to other sorts of
problems, ones for which he had little patience these days, and he trudged
forward.
The barn obfuscated the moon, becoming an eerie, glowing silhouette
on the otherwise barren landscape. Much of the unease he felt was the fault
of the relative silence though. He could never get used to the quiet out here,
in the country, where the din of traffic, of distant sirens, of civilization, took
a back seat to crickets and mosquitos. The only break from the bugs were
the pigs.
Those damnable pigs. Rooting, snorting, squealing. He’d been a bacon
every morning type of guy before the farm came into his life. Before the
pigs. When he saw up close what they were like, he’d been turned off all
things pork forever.
