the woods. As she was pushing eighty, that meant many a year wandering
through the mountains and hollers of southern West Virginia, yet she
couldn’t recall a single time she had felt afraid.
Until today.
She told herself she was being silly. There was nothing in these hills to
fear. Nothing worse than a little poison oak, anyway. It was time to push
away the old lady worrying and get back to searching the forest floor. Time
to resume her chore of harvesting ginseng.
Ahead, she spied a scattering of red berries and green leaves.
Hallelujah!

--- --- --- --- ---
The season was only two weeks old, and she’d already snared half a
pound. If she could double that today, she’d be up five hundred dollars.
That was a lot of money for a widow who survived on social security and
by the grace of the church’s food pantry.
Before she moved toward it, another wave of unease washed across her
body, making her frail arms break out in goosebumps that commingled with
her liver spots.
She wasn’t alone. She was certain of it.
“Who’s out there?” She scanned the woods around her, trying to find
anything amiss, but came up empty.
The only answer to her query came in the form of a swift breeze that
caressed her bare neck and sent a shiver down her stooped spine. She pulled
the bobby pins, freeing her hair from the loose bun and let her white locks
tumble down. The coverage they provided was sparse but better than
nothing.
Time to get on with the getting on, she told herself.
As she moved toward the ginseng, the wicker basket she had looped
over her forearm rocked back and forth. Back and forth. Her breath came
out in shallow puffs, visible against the cool morning temperatures.
Fall was her favorite season largely because of these crisp hours when
the air was pure, sent straight from God’s own lungs, and she refused to let
her nerves spoil an otherwise glorious day.
Abigail let out a little laugh, feeling ridiculous for being such a scaredycat. When she reached the first plant, she knelt and set the basket next to
her. She eased the small spade into the dirt, careful as a surgeon as she
circled the plant and brought it up.
