Hijack! kicks off the Cosmic Connections Cruise series with a fun, light-hearted interstellar romance wrapped in workplace and adventure tropes. The setup is playful and imaginative: Felicity Rowe, a vibrant cruise director thrilled for her big extraterrestrial job, is paired with the stern, scarred Captain Ellix Nehivar on a “date-and-mate” themed cruise through moons. The contrast between her bubbly optimism and his gruff “Captain Never-Smiles” persona establishes immediate tension and plenty of room for both romance and humor. The backdrop of a space cruise adds whimsy (“three-sunset cruise,” different moons, etc.), which suits the story well.
What’s especially strong about the book is how it blends character growth with romance. Felicity’s energy and kindness push through Ellix’s protective walls, while he’s forced to confront not just his own past (scars, reputation, the way others perceive him) but also a responsibility he doesn’t always want to accept. Their interactions—banter, reluctant moments of caring, misunderstandings—are emotionally satisfying, giving weight beyond the cute “alien matchmaking scheme” premise. Also, the inclusion of elements like anxiety representation gives depth to Felicity’s character and helps ground what could otherwise be a purely escapist fantasy.
On the flipside, some plot moments feel predictable or rely heavily on standard alien/rom-com tropes (grumpy/sunshine, workplace romance, etc.), but those may not bother readers who enjoy those tropes. A few scenes drag slightly as the tension rises before the payoff, but overall the pacing keeps you interested. If you like romantic sci-fi with charm, quirky characters, and a romance that warms up gradually, Hijack! delivers an enjoyable and sweet ride through space.
