SASHA
How I hated being the new kid, that’s all I’d repeated in my head since
I put in for my transfer. I had my duffle bag slung over my shoulder
as I entered the firehouse through one of the open bay doors.
Technically, it was the middle of the night, and my first shift wasn’t for a
few more days. But my daughter was with my parents for the night. Alone
in a new place without my kid down the hall made the house feel empty.
What could fill some time? Checking out my new home away from home.

The quiet and familiar surroundings of the firehouse always made me
introspective. My brain started to wander back to when my new life started.
What I hadn’t planned on was exchanging independence for security and a
little help. As Mel aged and went deaf before her first birthday, there were
decisions that needed to be made. And that’s what had me relocating to give
everyone a bit of breathing room.
My parents had finally bullied me into moving home so they could help
with Mel, too. They’d told me Leon and I were single, and even parents
needed time for themselves. Neither my best friend nor I agreed, but the
older Mel became, the more it made sense. They’d started talking about me
going out and reconnecting with old friends. I had no urge to do either
because that meant they wanted me to date again. Outside of Leon, neither
my best friend nor I had bothered keeping in touch with anyone we’d gone
to high school or college with.
“Hey.” I spun at the sound of a raspy, feminine voice to find a petite
woman with a buzzed head looking around the open door of a squad. She
was a few inches shorter than me. “Can I help you?”
“Hi. I’m Sasha Price, the new firefighter, EMT.” I introduced myself as
I approached her with my arm extended for a handshake in greeting.
She took my hand with a smile and a firm, quick shake. “I’m Marta
Sanchez. A little late for a visit, but also really early for your first day. You
trying to become the captain’s pet already?”
As I chuckled, I shook my head and stepped back. “I know, but my
daughter’s with my parents, and the house was too quiet. Thought I’d get a
lay of the land before my first day. The captain mentioned he was on a
twenty-four.”
Since my interview, I’d spoken with Captain Joel Harrelson several
times over the phone. He’d wanted to get to know me before I arrived.
During one of only two video chats we’d had, I could see he was skeptical
about bringing on a new person. He’d spoken fondly of the paramedics and
firefighters he had under his command. There was a slight warning in his
tone.
“He is, but he’s getting some sleep. We got three back-to-back call-outs
earlier. Why don’t I show you where your locker is and give you a tour?”
“Sounds great.”
