Imperial opens with an intriguing premise: Baylyn, an event planner, keeps encountering a man who feels like “wrong time, wrong place,” only to discover he lives—and works—in the shadows. Baylyn is a sympathetic heroine, balancing her commitments (to her work, her own safety) against her growing fascination with a man whose line of work she fundamentally disapproves of. Emir is moody, intense, and morally grey—he’s great at what he does, but you feel every weight that job carries. Their interactions are electric: the book leans heavily into tension, the pull of physical attraction, and the push of conscience. While the romantic heat is strong, Mills doesn’t shy away from exploring what Baylyn must sacrifice to enter Emir’s world, and how he deals with trust and transparency when his professional life depends on secrecy.
On the downside, at times the dichotomy between Baylyn’s ordinary life and Emir’s “shadow” life feels a bit predictable—many scenes revolve around Baylyn being shocked or hurt by the brutality or deception in Emir’s world. Some readers may want more depth or backstory earlier for Emir, to lessen the impact of occasional villainous-assassin tropes. Still, Imperial delivers well in terms of emotion and momentum: the plot moves steadily, the danger feels real, and the romance has both heat and heart. If you like enemies-or-almost enemies, slow-burn revelations, and romance wrapped up in danger and intrigue, this book offers a compelling start to what promises to be an engrossing series.
