--- --- --- --- ---
I FEEL HIS EYES on me from across the room.
It’s hot and sticky with all the bodies between us, trying and failing to
press closer to the stage to hear the band, but it’s his gaze that makes me
feel flushed all over. I press my sweating drink to my cheek as he pushes
through the maze of people, closing the distance between us inch by inch.
My stomach coils into a tight knot the closer he gets; until I’m strung so
tight I’m afraid I might snap. I let out a shaky breath when he gets close
enough for me to see the dark blue of his eyes, the dusting of hair on his
forearms under his rolled-up flannel, the sharp line of his stubbled jaw, the
rich brown of his wavy hair.
When he’s just a step away from my table, my fingers tap against the side
of my glass, itching to release some of the energy suddenly pulsing through
me.
And then he keeps going, passing right by my table, not stopping until he
reaches the bar. All the air releases from me like a deflating balloon. I
watch as he orders a drink, and I slide down in my seat to hide the blush
creeping up my neck and into my cheeks.
More than anything, I want to retreat to my car, but I remember why I’m
here. I know the people on that stage, strumming out country covers and
riling up the entire audience. The band is good, and they worked really hard
to secure this gig downtown. Hundreds of tourists will flit in and out of here
tonight to hear them play. And I want to be supportive.
So I stay in my chair, although reluctantly.
But I can’t help but let my eyes drift back to those broad shoulders and
the mop of perfectly tousled chestnut hair that walked right past me.
He’s not there, though, and I sigh.
“Mind if I sit?” a deep, warm voice asks from my other side, and I almost
jump out of my skin. Turning, I look right back into those deep blue eyes,
just as easily mesmerized by them as I was a few minutes ago.
“Oh,” I say on a whoosh of air before gathering myself enough to gesture
to the seat next to me. “Yes. Yeah, of course.”
Just Between Us by Madison Wright EPUB & PDFThe chair scrapes against the floor as he pulls it out and lowers himself
into it next to me. Suddenly, this table feels a lot smaller.
He reaches out a hand, and I slip my own into it, although the moment he
tries to introduce himself, the crowd erupts in applause and I miss his name.
I point to my ear, shaking my head, and he tugs on my hand until I’m
leaning forward. His breath is warm on my neck, and his lips brush against
the shell of my ear, making goose bumps break out across my skin. “I’m
Sam,” he says right as a cheer breaks out again.
