BROOKE
“How does a woman drown in her own backyard with a house packed
full of people?” the police officer asked, peering down at me. I shivered on
the edge of the bed and tried to keep my eyes focused on his. Whitney’s
sobs cut through the walls of the guesthouse. She hadn’t stopped wailing
since they pulled Kiersten’s body out of the pool. Kiersten’s vomit stained
my lips like someone had thrown up in my face. It didn’t matter if I
breathed through my nose or my mouth—the putrid smell made its way
inside me. I was her last kiss.

The paramedics hadn’t put their lips on top of hers. Kiersten’s lips were
already blue by the time they arrived. They’d thrown me off her and wasted
no time jabbing a tube down her throat and pumping air into her lungs.
My wet clothes stuck to me like rot, and I wanted to rip them off, but
the police wouldn’t let me change. They’d given me a towel, but that was it.
They hadn’t let anyone out of the guesthouse since they’d herded us in here
ten minutes ago. The main house was officially a crime scene, and none of
us were allowed to touch it.
Emergency vehicles surrounded the property. Their lights danced and
sparkled like Christmas bulbs in the windows. But this wasn’t Christmas,
and there wasn’t an emergency. Not anymore. They were too late.
“Maybe you can help us start figuring this mess out, Mrs. Lyons?” the
police officer continued after a few beats had passed and I still hadn’t
spoken. I stared at the badge on his puffed-out chest: BEVERLY HILLS
POLICE DEPARTMENT. My teeth chattered against each other as I finally
spoke for the first time since he’d brought me into the bedroom. “None of
this makes any sense to me either. None of it.”
“Well, we have to start somewhere, and you’re a logical starting point
since you were the one trying to save her when we arrived.” I stiffened at
his choice of words. I didn’t want that responsibility. Never did. He noticed
my reaction and quickly continued. “And also the fact that you’re the only
one around here not losing their shit at the moment.” He smiled and let out
a small laugh, trying to lighten the mood, but it wasn’t funny.
Suddenly, a woman broke into the room and pushed him aside like she
was annoyed with his approach. He was dressed in the standard police
uniform, but she was in regular business clothes. Expensive ones. Bitchyboss vibes emanated from her. She folded her arms across her chest and
propped her leg up on the bed frame. Doc Martens peeked out from
underneath her pants. “Ethan’s right, you know.” She motioned over her
shoulder at him, and he gave me a knowing nod.
“You’re the only person
keeping it together around here. Do you have a medical background?”
I shook my head and fought the urge to break away from her penetrating
eyes. Ten years of Catholic school had trained me well in keeping still and
not looking away.
“Humph . . . ,” she said like she was genuinely surprised by it, but I
wasn’t buying her act.
