Kira
I look like shit.
The music from the main room is barely audible in here, but the bass
echoes through the floor and into my bones. I splash cool water on my face,
and my unruly hair tangles in my damp fingers as I run them through the
strands that look more rusty than fiery in this lighting.
It’s all a futile attempt to hide the fact that I’m just about ready to pass out
on my feet.

Fuck it. I don’t know why I resist so hard.
I dig into my deepest apron pocket and fish out my little secret weapon.
Whoever invented caffeine pills deserves a Nobel Prize.
The bathroom door swings open as I swallow a handful of water from the
faucet, letting in the clear notes of a modern, upbeat, country-ish song for just
a moment before snicking closed again.
“Hey, pretty lady,” Kevin sings in tune with the song. “How you doing?”
I tear off a piece of paper towel, drying my hands and blotting my face
with it. “Just taking five. I’ll be out in a sec.”
“Hey, don’t rush on my account.” He strolls into the single stall, not
bothering to latch the swinging door as he takes a piss. “You need a hell of a
lot more than five minutes by the look of you.”
I throw the paper towel into the bin and prop my hands on my hips,
squinting at my reflection. I don’t look that bad, do I?
“Thanks. You really know how to bolster a girl’s confidence.”
He flushes the toilet then exits the stall, wriggling his eyebrows
suggestively. “You know what they say, a compliment is the best way to get
a girl’s attention.”
I roll my eyes and heave out an exaggerated sigh. “How bad is it out
there?”
Scrubbing his hands under the tap, he gives me a knowing look through
the mirror. “There’s a dozen people waiting for drinks and no one but you on
the bar. But I’m sure Jared will understand if you need a longer break.”
Sure he would. “He’d kick my ass for sure.”
Kev’s expression softens as he rests a damp hand on my shoulder.
“C’mon, Kira, I can tell you’re tired. Take another five. I’ll cover for you.”
I bite the inside of my cheek as a hot flush of anger surges through me.
He doesn’t mean it as an insult but it still feels like one. I don’t beg for
breaks. I’ve been doing this job for years. I’m not afraid of a little hard work,
and I don’t need to be coddled.
I’m about to snap back at him when I catch the look on his face. His
expression is kind and concerned. His dark eyes are filled with compassion.
He’s genuinely worried about me, and he’s simply offering to cover to make
sure I get a break.
I swallow my overreaction. “Thanks. I really appreciate it, but I’m good.
Honestly.”
