PRESCOTT
I mindlessly scroll through my social media, my leg bouncing up and down
with nerves. I’ve been sitting here waiting for the better part of the last half
an hour. Like seriously, why is this a thing? Aren’t appointments made to
avoid this insanity? Apparently, the answer would be no.

--- --- --- --- ---
I slide my finger over the screen, and dozens of photos of my friends
during the summer break fill my feed. Beaches, mountains, parks, parties…
You name it; they’ve done it.
The familiar image of Central Park pops up on my screen, I almost
scrolled past it, but then I see her. Her back is to the camera, but it’s her. That
dark hair is pulled up in a high ponytail revealing the graceful line of her
neck. I trace my finger over the image, the temptation to click on her name
almost overwhelming.
“Prescott Wentworth?”
My head snaps up instantly at the sound of my name. An older woman is
looking around the waiting room at the handful of people sitting there.
Locking my phone, I stand up.
“That’s me.”
The nurse smiles. “You can enter. The doctor will see you shortly.”
“Thanks,” I say, just as the deep voice behind me mutters: “It is about
fucking time.”
Great, just what I needed.
The nurse’s smile falls instantly because, of course, he wasn’t trying to
hide his disdain. Oh, no. Henry Wentworth wants everybody to know when
he isn’t happy. Why should anybody else have a good day when he’s an
unhappy son of a bitch.
The chair next to me creaks as he gets to his feet.
With an apologetic smile in the direction of the nurse, I make my way to
the office. The moment the door closes behind us, I turn around to glare at
my father. “Was that really necessary?”
“Of course it was!” Dad scowls at me, the vein in his forehead throbbing.
“We’ve been waiting here for the past forty minutes.”
I pull out my chair. “Nobody asked you to come.”
That was not the right thing to say because his face turned beet red. “The
last I checked, I’m still paying for your insurance, and you better remember
that.”
Because how could I forget?
My fingers clench by my sides as I try to regain my composure and not
blurt out what’s on the tip of my tongue. Thankfully, the door opens just then,
and Dr. Stevens steps in.
“Hello, Prescott. It’s good to see you again.”
“It’d have been better if we were received thirty minutes ago,” Dad says,
sitting down in his chair. “You know when our appointment was actually
scheduled?”
Seriously? I glare at my dad, but he’s too busy scrolling through his
phone.
Dr. Stevens, the best freaking orthopedic surgeon on the east coast, shifts
his attention from Dad to me and back.
“I’m sorry for the wait, but there was an emergency they needed my
assistance with…”
“Of course, there was.” Dad rolls his eyes. “Can we get along with this?
Some of us try not to be late to their meetings.”
The doctor’s jaw clenches, and I’m not sure which one of us wants to
deck him more at this moment. “Of course. Let’s get to business, shall we?”
The doctor opens the file and pulls out some papers along with an x-ray.
“Hmm…”
