ARABELLA
Wild shadows stretched out long fingers from the forest that never
slept toward the remote village of Shadowbank, promising death
to all those who drew near.
Arabella eyed the line of trees, fingers tightening around the
bow in her fist, as she waited for whatever creatures of the dark might
emerge. But as the forest’s edge remained motionless except for a flicker of
shadows, she resumed her pace atop the three-story stone wall—a poor
barrier between the villagers and the demons that paid too many house
calls.

Far above, the ward rippled around the village, the translucent dome a
far paler purple-blue hue than it was a few years ago. Unlike the hardy
villagers, the ward was worn down and near to collapse, and she feared one
targeted strike would bring it down.
Turning on a heel, she weaved behind a line of archers, eyes swiveling
between the line of trees on one side of the wall and the rows of houses
with thatched roofs on the other side. The path atop the wall was barely
wide enough for three people to walk abreast without weapons.
While Shadowbank was no true city, the large village surrounded by a
mountainous forest on three sides and a bay on the other boasted several
districts along with a port that sustained a small trading business. If it
wasn’t for the demons and monsters lurking in the shadows, perhaps the
village would have grown far larger. As it was, too few people dared to
venture this far from civilization. The risk for a swift and violent end was
too great.
“Enchantress,” the archers said softly, chins dipping over shoulders in
deference.
She nodded to them as she pushed back her thick braid of dark brown
hair over a shoulder.
Dressed head to toe in black leather with her hood pulled back to reveal
overlapping silver chains and a teardrop that hung to the center of her
forehead, none would mistake her for anything but what she was—an
enchantress, a protector of mankind.
The enchantresses had started joining the human soldiers atop the stone
walls encircling Shadowbank since the ward’s decline had become more
rapid. It would only be a matter of time until the demons and beasts of the
forest discovered the weak spots and came through.
There was a flash of movement near the line of trees.
Arabella spun, her bow directed toward the forest alongside the human
archers. She didn’t dare release her magic through the ward and risk
punching a hole through it that wouldn’t repair itself. But arrows were small
and didn’t have magic, so the ward should be minimally impacted.
“No way,” said one archer. “I thought she wasn’t coming for another
week.”
Relief flooded Arabella’s chest as brilliant as a sunrise, and tears welled
in her eyes.
“Finally!” she exclaimed, pushing her bow and quiver into a guard’s
hands.
