“Are you sure this is the best idea?” My sister hands me the bandages to
wrap my hands. I’ve been training for a month at this point, determined to
turn my muscles into more than what they were.
“What choice do I have, Anaya? It’s that or being stuck in this rut we’re
in.” I pluck one of the rolls of thin fabric from her hands and wrap it around
my palm and knuckles.

--- --- --- --- ---
Ever since our father died a year ago, no one from the clan has offered
us any assistance. As a result, my mother has had to slave away to make
ends meet, just to keep us fed and clothes on our backs, working her fingers
to the bones. She shouldn’t have to do this at her age. She should be retiring
in comfort. We should be taking care of her instead.
But with this tournament, we’ll never have to worry about anything
again if I can win.
The new alpha, the son of the highest House, has recently come of age,
which means he will be looking for a mate. This is no matter of preference.
No, the first female from each House has to fight for his “honor” to prove to
the rest of the clan that one of us is worthy to bear his pups.
It’s ridiculous if you ask me. Either he wants me, or he doesn’t. That’s
all it should boil down to. Instead, I have to present myself like some kind
of prized pig for him to pork me to town and back again.
I’ve never been interested in becoming a “blushing bride” for some
alpha to bed me. But if this is what it takes to keep my House comfortable
so my younger sister can have better options at her disposal, then so be it.
“We’re not in a rut,” Anaya huffs, folding her arms over her chest and
puffing out her cheeks. With all of the responsibilities she’s been carrying
lately, sometimes I forget she’s still a child until these very moments.
“Just because you don’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not there. Mom and I
have kept a lot from you.” I tighten the cloth bandage around my other hand
and clench my fists to ensure they’re correctly wrapped. I take no pleasure
in what I have to do. Violence should never be a first resort; my father
taught me that.
Being six feet in the ground isn’t going to provide me any sage advice
for this moment, however.
“And who’s fault is that that I don’t know anything, then?” She asks
with another huff.
I wish she would go away. I can’t deal with her attitude right now.
“Anaya, on any other day, we could have this conversation, but I need
to focus on the fight happening in two hours, okay? Can you please leave
me alone?” I pull my long jet-black hair into a ponytail on top of my head.
