Marco Morelli slammed on the brakes of his truck when he saw the blood.
Way too much of it.
Of course, even a small amount was too much, considering this was out
in the middle of nowhere, miles from town or any other house. No one else
would have been here. Especially nothing or no one who’d leave that much
blood behind.

--- --- --- --- ---
There were three plate-sized puddles of it on the pale gray asphalt that
was about thirty yards from the security gate that led to his house. To the
right of them, there was even more. Smears along one of the solar lighting
poles, as if someone with a bloody hand had tried to hold onto it. Marco
could see what he thought were actual fingerprints.
And then there was the spatter.
Arterial spray, from the looks of it, and that was pretty much
everywhere in Marco’s field of vision. On the solar lighting, the ground,
and even on the bushes that lined the road. Blood dripped from some of the
small purple flowers on the Texas sage shrubs.
What the hell had happened here?
Marco didn’t have a clue—not yet anyway—so he drew his Glock .22,
and he fired glances all around him. Since his place was on thirty acres of
what anyone would consider rural property in central Texas, there was
always the possibility of wounded wildlife. Deer, coyote, and foxes. But he
didn’t spot any animals.
No humans either.
“Harry,” he said, alerting the voice-controlled assistant app on his
phone, “have there been any breaches in the security system at the house or
on the property?”
“No breaches indicated, boss,” Harry responded in his Dirty
Harry/Clint Eastwood voice, a nod to Marco’s favorite movies.
Good. That meant no one had likely gotten past the gate and fence, or it
would have triggered some sensors. That, in turn, would have triggered
Harry, who would have alerted Marco while he’d been driving back from
his latest assignment. An assignment that had left him bone-tired and in
need of sleep. In need of some serious downtime, too, so he could process
the nightmare he’d just left behind.
But here was what appeared to be another nightmare.
He started driving again, slowly. Creeping along the road and keeping
watch all around him. Marco steered to the left to stay away from the
puddles of blood which meant driving on the shoulder.
Such that it was.
A remote rural road that serviced only one household didn’t get a lot of
upkeep and maintenance from the county, and the gravel from the shoulder
kicked up against the undercarriage of the truck. It sounded like gunfire.
And his gut reacted to that, too. Tensing and warning him that something
was wrong. Of course, the blood had already given him plenty of warning.
He considered calling his boss, Ruby Maverick, the head of Maverick
Ops, an elite team of former military and law enforcement who handled
everything from life and death investigations to personal security services.
