Melanie
I run into the police station and up to the desk. Mom is panicking after
receiving the call that Claire is in jail. We thought she was in her bedroom,
refusing to get up for school. But my sister had slipped out of her window
and gone down the fire escape.

--- --- --- --- ---
She is going to be in even more trouble when she gets home. Mom isn’t
upset anymore—she’s furious. Not this again. She’s going to have to find
someone willing to give us a loan for Claire’s bail. And we don’t have the
money to pay that back.
Claire has taken us further into debt. And she doesn’t seem to care.
An officer escorts me to the police station’s holding cells. Claire is in a
cell with a few other women, all of whom look like they’ve had better days.
She sits on the single bench in the cell, looking at the floor with her
shoulders hunched over. It is the same every time Mom or I bail her out.
She looks like an innocent teenager when we arrive, and then that
disappears as soon as we leave the police station. She is not a good actress
and I’m sick and tired of seeing this act.
I approach the bars.
“Claire?”
Claire looks up. Then she jumps to her feet and hurries over.
“Mel!” She grips the bars and tries to look relieved but I see the hint of
defiance in her eyes. “I knew you’d come.”
I am not playing her games. I glare at her.
“What the hell, Claire? Mom gets a call saying you were caught trying
to steal medication out of a pharmacy? Are you insane?”
Claire shrugs. She doesn’t look the slightest bit remorseful.
“Well, they weren’t using it.”
“Is that all you can say? They weren’t using it at that moment in time?”
“And your boss is pretty loaded. He could easily replace the stock.”
It takes a moment for the words to sink in, for me to realize what she’s
just said. I cannot believe it.
“You went to my workplace?” I slam my hand on the bars, making them
rattle. “Claire!”
Several of the women in the cell glare at me. The police officer who had
brought me in is watching me warily. But I don’t care. Claire has just
admitted to breaking into Jason’s business to steal. Is she insane?
“What?” Claire protests. “It’s not like the place is going to close down if
there isn’t a pharmacy. They can easily stock up again.”
