A gentle rain was falling when I crossed the River Liffey. I paused on the
footbridge, gazing at the domes and rooftops of Dublin. It was just on dusk
and the lights were coming on, reflecting in shattered fragments on the fast
flowing river. The mist-covered skyline, old and new, was shrouded in
timeless rain, as if the past and the future had fused together, and the wise
old river was the only constant in this city. Pulling the hood of my jacket
over my head, I continued toward the southern bank.

--- --- --- --- ---
It had been seven years since I had last been in Ireland. Seven years
ago – a lifetime it seemed – I had come here as an exchange student in my
final year of College. Entranced by Dublin’s Georgian charm, I’d spent a
leisurely summer, cycling and wandering, exploring the lanes and the vast
green parks surrounding the city. Entering the city centre that evening, I
was surprised at how familiar Dublin felt. I still recognised the uneven
cobblestones of Temple Bar and the wide, busy thoroughfare of Dame
Street, and I knew instinctively where the labyrinth of streets would take
me. Each twist and turn awakened a distant memory. I smiled, but just as
quickly felt a sudden sense of regret. It had been a different me who had
wandered these streets, I reflected, as Dublin castle appeared through the
mist. The thought made me frown.
As the rain pressed down on me, I wondered if I should have come
back. The summer days were long gone now, and the drizzle only
intensified my melancholy mood. The past seven years had not exactly
gone as planned. The truth was, my life just had a way of going wrong, as
though fate was working against me. Only yesterday, I had missed out on a
promising job in London. I could not face catching the train home, deciding
on the spur of the moment to take a cheap flight to Dublin for the weekend.
I guess I hoped these two days would take me back to some carefree,
happier time. But things could never be as they were, and the evening was
cold, and the rain kept falling, and all the golden memories were swathed in
grey.
My phone beeped.
How many messages did she have to send? This one read:
LIZZY ARE YOU COMING?? ALICE
Since I was only minutes away, I did not reply. The last time I had been
in Dublin, Alice had been here too. I didn’t know how she got my number –
I guessed we had some mutual friends after all this time. When I had
received her first message that morning, I had been tempted to ignore it, but
then I’d got a second message and after that several more.
