SOPHIE
Sophie struggles up the bank, legs shaking, swimming shoes baggy with
water. Her breath swirls in the cool morning air. Grabbing her dryrobe from
the rock, she puts her arms through the loose sleeves and drags up the chunky
zipper. The lambswool lining licks the water off her skin.

--- --- --- --- ---
How different to those childhood holidays on Cornish beaches, she
thinks as she gazes across the lake. She always stayed too long in the sea,
jumping the waves, emerging with blue lips and shivering limbs. Nan made
her a changing tube out of an old beach towel, gathered at the neck. It was
thin and rough and became sopping wet within seconds. She remembers Nan
rubbing her all over in her no-nonsense way – drying her with love.
Sophie laughs to herself. Nowadays she wouldn’t dream of going in
without her beloved dryrobe to return to, with its quick-dry technology,
ingenious waterproof pockets and a zip that can be fastened from both sides,
and all made from recycled materials. It’s supposed to be oversized, roomy
enough to go over several layers of clothing, even other jackets, but it
completely swamps her small frame.
All the gear and no idea, scoffed Ryan,
although he still agreed to buy it for her birthday and didn’t complain about
the heavy price tag. It’s part of the unspoken agreement between them – the
sad fact that he will never be out of her debt.
Her fellow swimmers are still in the water. They went in a couple of
minutes after her, so their maximum fifteen minutes isn’t up yet. Sophie
always tries to slip into the lake first, to experience the wonder of being
alone, at one with the elements. She loves the silence lapping around her, the
sensation of her heartbeat accelerating in response to the cold.
The others
always break the spell. They gasp and squeal as they wade in, as if it’s the
first time they’ve ever swum in open water. Once submerged, they bob about
in a loose circle – exclaiming how good they feel before lapsing into
mundane chat. Sophie always swims over and joins in, tries to find something
relevant to say. She likes these women and would never dream of telling
them to shut up.
The group is a lifeline, but what she really wants to do is swim
completely by herself in some remote and beautiful location: a secluded pool,
an old quarry with turquoise water, a rushing mountain river. It would be
intensely peaceful, yet also exhilarating. She would have to face her fears,
test her limits, put her body at risk, knowing that nobody would rescue her if
she got into trouble.
But that fantasy is never going to happen. ‘Swim with
others’ is one of the main rules, and Sophie is not a strong swimmer. She’s
not interested in swimming as a sport; doesn’t do it to get fit or lose weight.
She does it because it keeps her sane.
