MARCUS/WILLIAM
William opened his eyes to a glaring sunlight and the feeling of sand
tickling his toes. He blinked, his mind momentarily blurry—what
had he been doing just now?
“William? Will, are you there?” The frantic voice sounded in his ear.
He shook off his brief malaise and lifted his hand to the low-profile
earpiece he was wearing. “I’m right here. Stop fretting, Liam.”

He pretended to scratch his head and lowered his hand. Reaching for the
earpiece had been a rookie move, and his moment of fugue was inexcusable.
His handler back at the agency snorted. “Worrying about you is my job,
Will. Now, down to business. Do you have the Evening Star in your sights?”
Casually lifting his cell phone, William scanned the boats in the harbor.
The tracking technology installed on the device instantly honed in on the
preprogrammed identifying markers, magnified them, and correlated them to
the information in the harbor’s database—which William had hacked into
earlier.
“She’s here,” he said after a minute. “She’s going by the Pearl right now,
but physical characteristics are a ninety-five percent match.”
“Excellent. You know what to do…”
“Of course. Get on board, plant the bug, and get off without anyone any
the wiser.”
“Exactly. And fast, if you don’t mind. We’ve got a situation developing
here at headquarters that you’re getting pulled into. The sooner you get back,
the better.”
“I’ve hardly had a chance to enjoy the Seychelles.” He stood up, stared at
his phone, and then looked around the harbor like a clueless tourist. “It’s
lovely here this time of year, quite balmy. It would do you some good to get
out of your cubicle and into the sunshine once in a while.”
William wasn’t eager to go back to the dreary headquarters and the
somber faces occupying it, including his handler’s.
“We have sunshine in England,” Liam replied. “Perhaps not as much of it
as you are enjoying out there, but it suits me just fine. Now less chatter, more
getting a move on.”
“Ruthless taskmaster,” William muttered as he moved.
His oversized, colorful shirt-and-shorts combo provided plenty of room
for the Glock 19 he’d tucked into the small of his back. Getting the weapon
into the remote tropical country had been a challenge even for a seasoned
operative like him, but it was worth the trouble. He could have gotten a
weapon locally, but his aim was best with his own handgun, which was like
an extension of his hand. Naturally, he also had two knives on him, not to
mention the garrote imitating a handwoven leather bracelet on his left wrist,
but those were just accessories, the icing on the cake, so to speak.
