Jared
I hate doing interviews. Just hate it. But our team’s PR person has very
strong opinions on dealing with the press. She wants us active and
rehearsed.
“You do not comment on your teammates’ love lives,” she now lectures
me. “You smile and crack jokes about the way you skate.”
I frown at that.
“What’s wrong with the way I skate?”
Leyla rolls her eyes in frustration. I can tell that it’s taking everything in
her not to snap at me. She pulls her shoulders back and takes a moment to
regroup.

“There is absolutely nothing wrong with the way you skate, Jared.” She
gives me a polite smile, like she’s talking to a kid. She doesn’t mean any of
it. “But your job is to promote this team. Make people love you. Be funny
and charming. You want them to rush to the team website and buy your
jersey. You want companies to fight over signing you. You want…”
“Yeah, yeah,” I wave her off. “I know what to do. It ain’t my first
rodeo.”
“About that,” she points at me. “Do not use the word ain’t. It’s not cute,
and I don’t like it.”
I chuckle under my breath. “Yes, mom.” And speaking of that. “Oh shit,
I need to call my mom and let her know I’ll be on the radio. This is local,
or…?”
“For the love of God,” she clucks right before proceeding to smooth my
hair back. It is quite the effort considering I tower over her despite her high
heeled shoes.
“Hey!” I try to lean away from her. “This is a radio show. No one is
going to see my hair. And I like it like that,” I add defensively.
The look on Leyla’s face tells me that she is very close to kneeing me in
the balls.
“The show is being filmed so they can play it on their website later.”
I look down at the ratty shirt I have on.
“Oh shit, my mom’s gonna kill me if I show on TV dressed like this.
Why didn’t you say?”
Leyla puts both hands on her hips as she prepares herself to give me a
good tongue lashing.
“Because you are a grown ass adult, Jared. And you should know better
than leaving the house in the shirt you slept in last night.”
I run my hand up and down my chest, trying to come up with a good
excuse on why I look like shit. One thing is for certain – I did take the shirt
off last night before falling into bed.
“I didn’t sleep in this.”
“Well, you were wearing it last I saw you yesterday, so there’s that,” she
deadpans.
Since I don’t have a good comeback to what she just said, I look down
at my phone, ready to call my mom. She loves listening to all my
interviews, and she wants to make sure they’re live. The very few times I
forgot to tell her ahead of time, she was upset and threatened not to bake me
her famous brownies anymore.
“Call your mom,” Leyla instructs in a brisk tone. “I’ll let them know
you’re here.”
