I’m being a creeper, but I can’t help myself. Watching my hot neighbor do
his Tai Chi in his backyard is like the highlight of my day. It’s early
morning here in southern California and already the sun is out. I’m bent
over staring at him through one of the knot holes in our joint fence.
Listen, I told y’all I was being a creeper. It wasn’t a lie or an
exaggeration. You’d understand if you saw him. He’s tall and broad with
the kind of body that’s used as a machine. Have I mentioned that he does
Tai Chi shirtless?
Because, holy chest muscles, Batman! Shirtless Tai Chi is my new
favorite thing since moving to Culver City, California. It’s even better than
Coolhaus ice cream sandwiches, from the little ice cream shop just down
the road. And that’s saying something.
He’s got tattoos covering nearly all of his torso, some climb up his neck,
decorating his throat.

--- --- --- --- ---
His slow methodic movements turn him away from me so I’m presented
with his back. I’m pretty sure I sigh because his back is amazing. I think it’s
my favorite part. Except his face, which I haven’t seen super clearly, but I
can just tell that he’s handsome, not classically so, but he’s got character
behind his beard and scowl.
I’m pretty sure some of his tatts are military of some sort, but again it’s
hard to tell when I can only see him through a fence hole. He turns again to
face me, his eyes closed. Those low slung white pants he wears when he
does his workouts do little to hide the size of his massive thighs.
I should stop being such a weirdo and just go over and introduce
myself. It’s a neighborly thing to do. I stand upright and force myself to
walk away from the fence.
Initially I started gawking at my hot, bearded neighbor for purely
research reasons. I’m in L.A. to get a degree in screenwriting. My older
sister, Molly, keeps reminding me that I don’t actually need a degree to
write, but I figured it might help me network. Because everyone knows that
when it comes to Hollywood, it’s not what you know, but who you know.
I’m taking the semester off because truthfully, I hate it here. Also—and
this is the part I haven’t mentioned to Molly—I’m having second thoughts
about film school.
Normally, I tell Molly everything. She’s not just my sister, she’s my best
friend. Yeah, I sound like a dork, right? But our parents died when I was
young. Which means Molly and I were raised by our eccentric older
relatives. When I say eccentric, what I mean is rich and weird. Old-oilmoney, museums-with-our-family-name-on-them, it’s-impossible-to-makereal-friends rich and weird.
So, yeah, for most of my life, it’s been Molly and I against the world.
Which is great. Except Molly has always known who she is and what she
wants. She’s the kind of lovable hot mess that everyone …. Well, just loves.
Case in point, Molly just met her soulmate in the middle of the Ozark
Mountains after she hit a giant, bearded billionaire with her car. Yeah, you
read that right.
And I’m me.
